IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
THE PROCESS ILLUSTRATES THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF THE INSTANT NOODLES. THE PROCESS CONTAINES 8 DIFFERENT STEPS. STARTING WITH THE STORAGE OF FLOUR AND ENDING WITH THE FINAL PACKAGING OF THE PRODUCT.
OVERALL, FLOUR PASSED THROUGH 8 CONSECUTIVE STEPS. THE FIRST PROCESS IS STORAGE SILOS WHILE THE LAST STEP IS LABELLING AND SEALING.
FIRSTLY, THE FLOUR TRANSFERRED TO STORAGE SILOS. IN THE SECOND STEP, THE FLOUR IS MIXED WITH WATER AND OIL IN A MIXER. THE THIRD STEP INVOLVES PASSING THE MIXURE THROUGH DOUGH SHEETS. AFTER THIS, THE MIXURE PASSES THROUGH DOUGH STRIPS. IN THE FIFTH STEP, THE DOUGH IS SHAPED IN NOODLES DISCS.
AFTER THIS, THE NOODLES DISCS GO THROUGH THE COOKING AND DRYING PROCESSES. ONCE THESE PROCESSES ARE COMPLETED, THE DRIED NOODLES ARE PLACED IN TO CUPS. THEN, SOME VEGETABLES AND SPICES ARE ADDED TO THEM. IN THE NEXT STEP,THE CUPS ARE SEALED AND LABELLED. FINALLY, THE FINISHED PRODUCTS ARE READY FOR SALE.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence from flour storage to finished noodles, and your overview correctly names the first and final stages. Most key stages are included, including mixing, shaping, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: “passing the mixture through dough sheets” and “through dough strips” do not clearly explain that rollers form the dough into sheets and then strips. The overview also says there are eight steps, while the description includes additional stages such as the rollers and cup filling, making the sequence difficult to interpret. Explain that the noodles are placed into cups before vegetables and spices are added, and describe the final output as sealed, labelled cups rather than saying they are ready for sale, which the diagram does not show.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account of the process. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “After this,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the stages, and the progression from flour storage to packaging is generally logical. This meets the expected level of coherent organisation. However, the overview repeats information from the introduction, and the repeated use of “step” and “process” makes the linking somewhat mechanical. Some references are also unclear: “the mixture passes through dough sheets” does not make the relationship between the material and the stage easy to follow. Grouping the shaping stages together and using clearer references to the noodles and cups would make the progression smoother and more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “cooking,” “drying,” “vegetables and spices,” and “labelling and sealing.” These terms make the general subject clear, and some less common task-specific language is attempted. However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward in context. “The mixture passes through dough sheets” confuses the material with the product formed, while “the dough is shaped in noodles discs” is not a natural description of the stage. “Final packaging” is also less precise than naming the cups being sealed and labelled. Aim for accurate process collocations such as “is rolled into sheets,” “is cut into strips,” and “is formed into noodle discs.” Check spelling and word forms, including “contains” and “mixture.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some more developed structures, including “Once these processes are completed” and “After this,” so there is some variety. The main sequence is usually understandable, and errors do not generally prevent the reader from following it. However, some grammatical problems remain. Tense shifts between “the flour transferred” and “the flour is mixed” make the account less consistent; use the present simple passive throughout, such as “is transferred” and “is mixed.” There are also article and preposition issues in “placed in to cups,” and the sentence “The third step involves passing the mixture through dough sheets” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the action and the product. Proofread punctuation and spacing around commas as well.
