IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This diagram illustrates the manufacturing process of instant noodles. Let's go through the series of 8 step involved in manufacturing of instant noodles from transportation and storage, making and cooking the noodle dough, adding flavour and packaging the noodles at the end of the process
Flour, an essential ingredient in instant noodles, is first transported from the farms to a storage location called silos before we can start out manufacturing process. The manufacturing process is started by loading flour from the storage to a mixer where water and oil is added into it and mixed with the flour to create dough.
The dough is then loaded on rollers that flattens it in the form of dough sheets in the third step. In the fourth step, the dough sheets is seperated into multiple strings of dough called dough strips.
In the fifth step, the dough strips are formed into noodle sticks which is then fried in cooking oil and later dried in the sixth step before packaging.
In the seventh step, the dried noodles are packed into packaging cups where the flavours are added for such as vegetables and spices. After adding the flavours, we now move to step eight which is the final step of noodle manufacturing. Here, the packed cups are labelled according to their flavour and sealed for protection and shipped out on a rolling belt.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as a sequence and cover its main stages, from flour storage and mixing through shaping, cooking, adding ingredients, and sealing. The opening also gives a useful broad summary of the production stages. However, some details are inaccurate or insufficiently precise: the diagram shows flour arriving by truck, not from farms, and the noodles are formed into discs rather than “noodle sticks.” The description of the final stages also suggests the cups are labelled according to flavour and shipped out, neither of which is shown; instead, labels are added and the cups emerge on a conveyor. These unsupported details and the limited overview of the process’s key transformations keep the account from fully addressing the visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence, with paragraphs moving from the initial ingredients to the final packaging. Numbering stages (“third step,” “fourth step,” and “sixth step”) helps readers follow the process, and transitions such as “The dough is then” and “After adding the flavours” support progression. This coherent organisation is a strength. To make the flow more polished, avoid conversational framing such as “Let’s go through” and “we now move to step eight,” which is less suitable for an academic report. Some references are also imprecise: “it” in the mixing sentence could refer to the flour or the mixture, and “the packed cups” is not quite clear. More direct links between stages would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “dough strips,” “flavours,” and “sealed.” These terms make most stages understandable, and you attempt more specific wording such as “essential ingredient” and “transportation.” However, some choices are inaccurate or awkward for the diagram: “noodle sticks” does not describe the noodle discs, while “packed into packaging cups” is repetitive and “shipped out” adds an unsupported action. Spelling errors such as “seperated” and “flavours” (if using American spelling elsewhere, maintain consistency) also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise process terms and natural collocations rather than adding details not shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and longer clauses to describe the sequence, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some grammatical errors recur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “series of 8 step” needs a plural noun, “water and oil is added” requires a plural verb, and “rollers that flattens it” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “the dough sheets is seperated,” both agreement and the passive form need correction. The opening sentence is also a fragment after “process,” and “flavours are added for such as” is not a complete grammatical construction. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions and check agreement in each clause.
