IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram below shows the 8 stage non-cyclical proccess of instant noodle manifacturing, from making the instant noodles to labelling and sealing them. First step concerns the storage of imported flour in storage silos where tracks pick up large quantities of it to drop it off inside the mixers. From there the second step is mixing the four with oil and water to make the dough mix for noodles until it is solid enough. Third step in the manifacturing proccess is passing the solid noodle dough through rollers to make dough sheets. From there the fourth step consists of passing the dough sheets through cutters to make the shape of the noodles. As a fifth step noodles are arranged in noodle discs which, following the sixth step of the proccess, are cooked in oil and then dried. When completely dry, following the second to last step, they are put in cups with vegetable and spice mixes. From there, as the last step, the instant noodle cups go on to get sealed and labelled to be exported.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as having eight stages and describe its broad progression from flour storage to packaging, so the response is relevant and includes several key stages. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram shows flour being delivered by a truck to the silos, not trucks collecting it from them, and the dough is cut into strips before being formed into noodle discs. The overview also does not clearly summarise the main transformation from flour and added liquids through cooking and packaging. The final claim that the cups are “to be exported” is not shown in the diagram. To strengthen the response, report the stages more precisely and include the addition of vegetables and spices and the final emergence of sealed cups.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The stages are presented in a generally logical order, and sequencing phrases such as “First step,” “From there,” and “as a fifth step” help the reader follow the process. This clear progression supports the response, although the repeated step-by-step framing can feel mechanical. Some links are also unclear: “From there” is used several times without always making the relationship between stages explicit, and the sentence about the noodles being placed in cups moves quickly from drying to packaging. Grouping the process into a short overview and two stages-based sections, while using more varied transitions such as “subsequently” or “after this,” would make the organisation more flexible and the connections between steps clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixers,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” and “sealed and labelled,” which generally communicates the manufacturing sequence. Some word choices are imprecise or do not match the diagram: “tracks pick up” misdescribes the truck’s role, “cutters” is less precise than describing the dough being formed into strips, and “vegetable and spice mixes” is not the same as the diagram’s vegetables and spices. There are also spelling errors in “proccess” and “manifacturing,” and “four” appears to be a mistaken word choice for “flour.” Aim for accurate process collocations and proofread spelling so that the vocabulary is both clear and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes a mix of sentence forms, including longer clauses that connect stages, as in “When completely dry … they are put in cups.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors reduce accuracy. For example, “First step concerns” needs an article (“The first step concerns”), and “the second step is mixing the four with oil and water” has an unclear grammatical construction. Several sentences run together after full stops, as in “noodles. As a fifth step” and “proccess, are cooked”; consistent spacing and punctuation would improve readability. The phrase “until it is solid enough” also has an unclear reference. Use clear passive constructions to describe each stage and check articles, sentence boundaries, and pronoun references.
