IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates how instant noodles are manufactured. Overall diagram shows 8 steps namely storage soiling, mixing, dough sheeting, striping, noodles discing, drying, adding vegetables, and labeling. In the first step flour is store in silos. Secondally water and oil is mixed in it to prepare a mixture in mixer. Thirdly it is rolled by rollers to synthesize sheets. Fourthly sheets are passed through the strips to continue its process afterthat in fifth stage it is passed through the discs. In the 6 step oil is added for cooking than it is dried and whole material is transfered into plastic cups. The seven is almost finishing step in which vegetables and spices are added to iprove flavour and smell. We can add remaing ingredients during this. Finally it is label and sealed and ready to sell. In conclusion preparing noodels is very easy which is clearly visible through the diagram.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as a sequence and mention several key stages, including flour storage, mixing, rolling, cooking and drying, adding vegetables and spices, and sealing. However, some stages are inaccurately described or unclear: the dough is formed into sheets and then strips, while your account says the sheets are “passed through the strips”; the strips are shaped into noodle discs, not simply “passed through the discs.” The overview lists eight steps but does not clearly summarise the transformation from flour to finished cups. You also introduce unsupported details, such as saying the noodles are transferred into plastic cups during cooking and that extra ingredients can be added. Focus on accurately reporting the diagram’s sequence and avoid personal conclusions such as “preparing noodles is very easy.”

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows the general order of the manufacturing process, and ordinal markers such as “First,” “Thirdly,” and “Finally” help the reader track the stages. However, the account is presented as one continuous paragraph, and the repeated sequencing words make the progression mechanical rather than smoothly connected. Some links between stages are unclear: “sheets are passed through the strips” and “in the fifth stage it is passed through the discs” do not explain what happens to the dough. The overview and detailed description also overlap without a clear distinction. Use a separate overview and a paragraph for the stages, then connect them with precise references such as “the resulting dough” and “these discs.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “silos,” “rollers,” “mixture,” “vegetables,” and “spices,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the process difficult to follow. Examples include “storage soiling,” “dough sheeting,” “striping,” “noodles discing,” “transfered,” “iprove,” and “noodels.” Several expressions are also unnatural or inaccurate: “synthesize sheets” and “passed through the strips” do not describe the diagram clearly. Build a reliable set of process verbs and nouns, such as “form,” “cut,” “shape,” and “seal,” and check spelling and collocations before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is mostly expressed in the present tense. However, grammatical errors occur frequently, including incorrect verb forms and agreement: “flour is store,” “water and oil is mixed,” and “it is label and sealed.” Articles and sentence construction are also unreliable, as in “Overall diagram shows 8 steps” and “The seven is almost finishing step.” Some longer sentences become difficult to follow because clauses are joined without clear grammatical structure, particularly the sentence beginning “In the 6 step.” Practise accurate passive forms for processes—for example, “the flour is stored” and “the noodles are dried”—and use shorter, complete sentences when describing each stage.
