The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The provided process diagram illustrates the various steps involved in the manufacturing of instant noodles.
Overall, the process consists of seven stages beginning with the taking of flour from the large storage structures and ends with the labelling and sealing of the product.
The process begins with the taking of flour from the storage silos, after that the flour is mixed with water and oil. Thereafter, the roller makes the dough sheets. In the fourth stage, the strips are made with the rolling the wheat flour and then these strips are transformed into noodles discs. The noodles discs are cooked with oil and they are dried for putting in the cups. Subsequently, vegetables and spices a

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the process as manufacturing instant noodles and give a basic opening-to-later-stages account, including mixing flour with water and oil, forming sheets and strips, and cooking and drying the noodles. However, the overview is inaccurate: it says there are seven stages, while the diagram shows eight numbered stages, and it suggests the process ends with labelling and sealing without describing the finished cups. The response also stops before explaining the addition of vegetables and spices and the final packaging stages. The required minimum length is not met, which contributes to the limited coverage. To improve, give an accurate overview and report the complete sequence, including cup filling, labelling, sealing, and the finished product.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a chronological account. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “Thereafter,” and “Subsequently” help show the order of events. However, progression is incomplete because the account ends mid-sentence at “vegetables and spices a,” leaving the final stages unconnected and unexplained. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the sequence of “after that,” “Thereafter,” and “In the fourth stage.” Use clear paragraphing and connect each stage with varied, precise transitions; ensure the final sentence completes the process and links the additions to the packaging stages.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” “noodles discs,” and “cooked,” so the reader can identify several stages. The range is nevertheless limited, with repeated reliance on “process,” “stage,” and “made.” Some expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “the taking of flour,” “the roller makes the dough sheets,” and “cooked with oil”; the diagram indicates that the noodles are cooked in oil and then dried. Aim for more accurate process collocations, such as “flour is transferred,” “the dough is rolled into sheets,” and “the discs are deep-fried and dried.” More precise vocabulary would make the description clearer and less repetitive.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “Overall, the process consists of seven stages beginning…” and “The noodles discs are cooked with oil and they are dried…”. The main sequence is generally understandable, but control is uneven. For example, “the process … begins with the taking … and ends” shifts awkwardly between a noun phrase and verb form, while “after that the flour is mixed” needs clearer punctuation between clauses. The phrase “with the rolling the wheat flour” also has an incorrect grammatical pattern, and the final sentence is incomplete. Practise forming passive process descriptions consistently and check clause boundaries, articles, and verb forms. Completing each sentence would also help demonstrate more reliable control.
