IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The flow chart depicts the processes involved in manufacturing of instant noodles.

Overall, there are eight steps involved in the production of instant noodles beginning with the removal flour from the storage silos and ends at labelling and sealing.

To begin with, the flour that has been stored in the storage silos is removed and transported by a van to the mixer, where water and oil will be added to the flour and then be mixed thoroughly, after this it will be moved to the rollers and then dough sheetsare formed. The dough sheets are then cut into strips before they are rolled into noodles discs.

Following this, the noodles discs will be cooked with oil in a pan and the cooked noodles discs will be dried afterwards. In stage 7, vegetables and spices are put in cups and then the noodles wrap and spices cup will be labelled and sealed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as a sequence and give a useful overview that it begins with flour storage and ends with labelling and sealing. Most central stages are included, including mixing, forming sheets and strips, shaping noodle discs, and cooking and drying. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the flour is transported from the silos by a pipe, not a van, and the final stage involves adding vegetables and spices to the noodle cups before the cups are labelled and sealed. The sentence about a “noodles wrap and spices cup” does not clearly report this sequence. The overview also says production begins with “removal” of flour, rather than its delivery from storage to the mixer. More precise reporting of the final stages would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that follow the production sequence. Connectors such as “To begin with,” “Following this,” and “afterwards” help the reader track the stages, and the progression from mixing to shaping and then cooking is generally logical. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the final paragraph compresses several actions into one unclear sentence, particularly “the noodles wrap and spices cup will be labelled and sealed,” so the relationship between the noodles, ingredients, and cups is difficult to follow. Use clearer references and separate the addition of ingredients from the labelling and sealing stage.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “mixer,” “rollers,” “dough sheets,” “strips,” and “labelled and sealed.” These terms are relevant and allow the reader to understand most of the manufacturing stages. There are also some imprecise choices: “van” misidentifies the flour-delivery equipment, while “pan” is less accurate than the diagram’s cooking bath. The phrase “noodles wrap and spices cup” is awkward and obscures what is being packaged. There is also a spacing error in “sheetsare.” Aim for precise nouns and natural collocations when describing machinery and packaging; this will make the process easier to visualise without requiring a much broader vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the flour that has been stored in the storage silos” and a sequence of linked actions. The meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. The overview has a faulty construction in “beginning with the removal flour … and ends,” where the article/preposition and parallel verb form need correction. In “where water and oil will be added … and then be mixed,” the passive structure is not consistently formed. The long opening process sentence also joins several stages without clear punctuation, and “dough sheetsare” contains a missing space. Review parallel structures, passive forms, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy while retaining your range of clauses.
