IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates about the noodles that how they are manufactured instantly, showing the different stages involved the production process.
Overall, it is clear that instant noodle production involves eight main stages, beginning with flour, water, and oil and ending with the labeling and sealing of the noodle cups.
At the first stage of the process, flour is stored in large storage silos. After that, the flour is putting into the mixer. Then, water and oil is added into mixer. Then the rollers starts moving and mixed it well with added ingredients. Next, the mixture passes through rollers to produce dough sheets, which are then cut into thin strips. Dough sheets have the ability to produce the thin strips.
After that, the dough strips are shaped into noodles discs. Next, these discs are cooked in oil and dry. After cooling, vegetables and spices are added to the noodles. Finally, the noodles are putting into cups and then ready for labeling and sealing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as having eight stages and give a clear start and finish, from flour storage to labelling and sealing. Most of the main sequence is included, including mixing, forming sheets and strips, shaping discs, cooking, and adding vegetables and spices. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the overview says production ends with labelling and sealing, while the diagram also shows finished cups emerging; “After cooling” is not shown; and the account does not clearly explain that the cups are filled before labelling and sealing. The repeated statement that sheets produce strips adds little. To make the report more complete, describe the final packaging stages precisely and avoid adding unsupported steps.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic, sensible structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological account of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “At the first stage,” “After that,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. However, the progression becomes mechanical because “Then” and “Next” are used repeatedly, and some links between stages are unclear. For example, the sentence about rollers “moving and mixed it well” does not clearly connect mixing to the production of dough sheets. The two sentences about dough sheets and strips also repeat the same point. Grouping related stages into clearer sentences and using more varied, precise transitions would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “storage silos,” “dough sheets,” “thin strips,” “noodles discs,” and “labeling and sealing,” so the reader can generally understand the stages. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “manufactured instantly,” “putting into the mixer,” and “cooked in oil and dry.” The repeated use of “Then” also makes the description less varied. Aim for precise process verbs and natural combinations, such as “is transferred,” “is cut into strips,” and “is cooked and dried.” Consistent spelling of “labelling” or “labeling” would also make the report more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors occur frequently in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “the flour is putting into the mixer” needs a passive form, while “water and oil is added” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “the rollers starts moving and mixed it well,” the subject does not agree with the verb and the verb forms are inconsistent. The opening phrase “about the noodles that how they are manufactured” is also structurally awkward. Practise accurate passive constructions for process descriptions and check agreement and tense consistency; these changes would make the sequence easier to read.
