IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how instant noodles are manufactured.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided diagram illustrates the various stages involved in the commercial production and packaging of instant noodles.

Overall, the manufacturing process consists of eight main linear steps, biginning with the storage of raw flour and last the final labeling and sealing of ready to eat noodle cups.

The process start from storage silos, where flour is kept before being transportedto a mixer. in this second stage, water and oil are added to the flour and then blended. Once mixed, the substances passes though rollers to be flated and converted into dough sheets.

After this process, these sheets are cut into dough strips and then mechanically shaped into noodles discs. Following this shaping phase, the noodles discs undergo cooking in oil and drying.

after this all done , the noodles are placed into cups along with added vegetables and spices. In the final stage the se filled container ndergo labeling and sealing. resulting in the finisheed packaed noodles cups ready for distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the process as a sequence from flour storage to packaged noodles, and the overview correctly highlights the beginning and final stages. Most key stages are reported in the right order, including mixing, rolling, cutting, cooking and drying, and adding vegetables and spices. This covers the task well, but some details are less fully or precisely described: for example, the diagram shows the noodles entering cups as vegetables and spices are added, followed by labelling and sealing, whereas “placed into cups along with added vegetables and spices” compresses these steps. The overview also calls the process “eight main linear steps,” although the diagram includes intermediate transformations and additions. A more precise overview and clearer reporting of the packaging sequence would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs that follow the manufacturing sequence, so the reader can track the process from storage to packaging. Sequencing expressions such as “Once mixed,” “After this process,” and “In the final stage” help connect stages, and the progression is generally clear. The main limitation is that some transitions are awkward or do not clearly mark the relationship between stages: “After this all done” is informal and unclear, while “Following this shaping phase” could refer more precisely to the formation of the noodle discs. The final paragraph also runs several stages together. Use concise, consistent sequencing language and separate the cooking stage from cup filling and sealing to make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “commercial production,” “storage silos,” “converted,” “dough sheets,” “mechanically shaped,” and “labeling and sealing.” These terms make the account relevant and generally understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise, such as “substances” for the flour mixture, “flated” for the action of rollers, and “ready to eat noodle cups.” Several spelling errors—“biginning,” “transportedto,” “finisheed,” and “packaed”—also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise manufacturing terms and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the mixture as dough being flattened, and refer to the finished product as sealed cups of instant noodles. This would make the vocabulary more controlled and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including the overview clause “beginning with…” and the time clauses “Once mixed” and “Following this shaping phase.” The sequence remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The process start” needs a third-person singular verb, “the substances passes” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “the noodles are placed” shifts from the earlier process description without a consistent construction. Sentence boundaries and capitalization are also inconsistent, as in “in this second stage” and “after this all done ,”. Use a consistent present simple or passive voice for process stages, check agreement, and punctuate each sentence cleanly. More accurate control of these forms would improve clarity.
