IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent days, many people believe that promoting product is successful to influence customer to buy products. While others contend that, it is now too much common that people sometimes no longer pay attention. In this essay, I will examine both viewpoints, my opinions and incorporating examples.

On the one hand, in past, only big company and widely selling company only can afford advertising. That time advertise less popular and people always notice advertise so excitedely. For example, in Bnagladesh, if I talk about before 2000, there was no colour tv and people saw black and white TV and whatever they can see on TV, they seen very interestingly. they also want purchase whatever they saw on TV. Therefore, it is right that less availability and little promotion can influenced people very easily.

For instead, nowadays, all kind of products owner try to promote so that they can sell their product easily. Even though, dresses, earing and all kind little prices products also try to promote. For this reason people are thinking that it not will be same as they are promoting and people sometimes not interested to but products by watching promotion. So, I think proper promotion is more necessary rather than promoting until to stock out.

To sum up, advertising is a good way to selling high range of product. However, people saw all kind of product promotion and sometimes they didn't find good products and dor this reason, nowaday people couldn't believe any promotion and that is why customers always confused to buying products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views: the first body paragraph argues that less frequent advertising once attracted attention, while the next explains that widespread promotion can make people ignore or distrust it. Your conclusion also gives a general view that advertising can be useful but excessive promotion is less effective. However, the task asks for your opinion, and this is not stated clearly until the later paragraph; the opening promises to discuss it but does not identify your position. The historical example from Bangladesh is relevant, but it mainly describes television and does not fully explain how advertising persuades consumers today. Develop each view with a clearer explanation and a specific example, and state your opinion directly in the introduction and conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the broad direction of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first body paragraph moves from past advertising to television in Bangladesh and then to a general claim without fully connecting these points. Some linking phrases are inaccurate or awkward, such as “For instead” and “Even though,” and the conclusion repeats ideas about promotions rather than bringing the two views together. Use straightforward transitions such as “On the other hand” and make each paragraph develop one central point in a clear sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “advertising,” “promote,” “products,” and “customers,” so the subject is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “promoting product,” “selling high range of product,” and “people are thinking that it not will be same as they are promoting.” There are also spelling errors such as “Bnagladesh,” “excitedely,” and “nowaday.” Aim to use more precise expressions for the two arguments, such as “capture consumers’ attention,” “become saturated with advertisements,” and “distrust promotional claims,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “While others contend…” and a conditional example with “if I talk about before 2000.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors in basic sentence construction occur throughout. For example, “people sometimes no longer pay attention” is not connected smoothly to the opening clause, while “people are thinking that it not will be same” has incorrect word order and an incomplete verb phrase. There are also problems with articles, plurals, agreement, and tense, as in “only big company … can afford” and “they seen very interestingly.” Practise building accurate subject–verb sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and check verb forms and punctuation.
