IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people believe that advertisements are everywhere so customers are looking now for the quality of the product rather than its advertising campaign. Others argue that marketing is crucial to convince people due to its influence on customers' decision making. I agree with the latter view because advertising is the open key to introduce the product for its probable users.

On one hand, alot of people don't pay attention to how products are offered. They are looking on what it is made and from where it is came.

As a result, they are not interested on the emotional side of the marketing campaign because they know exactly what they want. But, many of good products such as some local brands of clothes are not popular because their owners are not specifying any budget for marketing however their garments are well produced.

On the other hand, you find that the successful businesses spend a huge amount of money on advertising and recruting teams of marketing experts to boost their sales. This is because customers in general are emotionally oriented and they will buy from you if you introduce well your service for them. For instance, mothers like to buy clothes for their babies from facebook pages that represent on their ads the product with emotions that make those mums perduaded to purchase.

In conclusion, although some people are not influenced by marketing campaigns when they buy and they focus only the quality of product.

I agree that advertising is a crucial stage in the process of selling any product or service because it is the best way to introduce it and by the end sell it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear preference for the view that advertising remains influential: “I agree with the latter view.” The examples of local clothing brands and baby clothes advertised on Facebook are relevant and help illustrate the contrast. However, the two positions are not developed equally. The point that some consumers prioritise product quality is introduced, but the explanation of why widespread advertising may be ignored remains brief. Your own argument that advertising introduces products is clear, though the claim that customers are generally “emotionally oriented” would benefit from more explanation or qualification. The conclusion restates your position, but its opening clause is left incomplete. Develop each view with a fuller explanation and make the final summary a complete, balanced statement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. “On one hand” and “On the other hand” make the contrast easy to follow, and the examples are placed with the relevant arguments. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the point about local clothing brands follows the discussion of consumers who ignore marketing without a clear link explaining how it supports that view. Some connections also feel mechanical, particularly repeated use of “because” and “As a result.” The conclusion begins with “although” but does not complete that sentence before moving to a new one, disrupting the ending. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and ensure each paragraph develops one connected line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “advertising campaign,” “marketing experts,” “boost their sales,” and “emotional side,” which allows you to discuss both consumer behaviour and business strategy. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “decision making” and “local brands.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “open key,” “specifying any budget,” “introduce well your service,” and “perduaded.” Spelling errors such as “alot” and “recruting” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main ideas, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build a bank of common advertising collocations and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrastive opening and clauses introduced by “because” and “although.” Most of the main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “They are looking on what it is made and from where it is came” has problems with prepositions and verb forms; “they are not interested on” uses an incorrect preposition; and “although some people are not influenced … and they focus” is left as an incomplete clause. There are also article and sentence-structure issues in phrases such as “the quality of product.” Practise forming complete complex sentences, especially with concessive clauses, and check verb patterns and prepositions when editing.
