IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this competetive world where brands are more focusing on marketing rather than branding, advertisments play a crutial role is sales but lots of advertisments make people distracted and ignored by the product. However people often buy products by watching advertisements which can't be ignored. I belive advertisments create the brand image in people perspective and are really significant in bussinesses.

Firstly, it is noticed that brands often promote their products through different modes. which helps in getting recogniesd by the consumer which ultimately owes to incease in sales of their product which results in the growth of demand due to which company can generate huge revenue. For example, JIO spends one third of their revenue in marketing and promotions because of which it has a good brand image in india.

Following,it is also a fact that too much advertisments make people bored due to the fact people start igoring those advertisments because they feel exhausted and undervalue the product by thier promotions on regular basis. However companies also notices this psychological impact and worked on making creative advertisements which could hold the attention of people by attractive hocks, good story-telling and different kinds of comedies such as dark comedy, political satires. For example, 5 star aired one advertisement on satire which was very famous because of its story telling.

To sum up, i advise adverisment plays a major role in bussinesses for product sales and recognition but spending too much on advertisements decreases the profit margins and people buys the products when they want so it is not neccesary to get lots of attention in todays world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response discusses both views: it explains that advertising can increase recognition and sales, then notes that repeated exposure may bore consumers. Your examples of Jio’s marketing and the 5 Star advertisement help make these points relevant. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view is mainly linked to revenue and brand image, while the second focuses on boredom and creative advertising; neither is explored in much depth or balanced with a clear explanation of when advertising persuades people versus when they ignore it. Your opinion appears in the introduction and conclusion, but it is not consistently precise: the final claim that people buy products when they want does not fully clarify your position on advertising’s influence. Develop each view with clearer reasoning and state your judgement directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting the contrasting views, and a conclusion. This gives the reader a basic route through the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several ideas are joined into long chains, particularly the first body paragraph’s sequence from promotion to recognition, sales, demand, and revenue. Some linking expressions are awkward or mechanical, such as “Following” and “However,” where the relationship between ideas is not always clear. The conclusion also introduces spending and profit margins without preparing these points in the body. Use clearer topic sentences, separate cause-and-effect steps, and connect the conclusion to the arguments already developed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “brand image,” “revenue,” “profit margins,” “psychological impact,” and “story-telling.” These choices show an effort to discuss advertising beyond basic terms. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable throughout, including “competetive,” “advertisments,” “recogniesd,” and “neccesary,” which can distract the reader. Some combinations are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “brands are more focusing on marketing,” “owes to incease,” and “attractive hocks.” Repetition of “advertisements” and “people” limits the range. Check spelling carefully, learn common collocations such as “focus on marketing” and “contribute to an increase,” and use precise alternatives for repeated terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “which,” and “due to the fact that.” This gives you a basis for expressing cause and contrast. However, many sentences contain errors in structure, agreement, tense, or punctuation, and some long sentences become difficult to process. For example, “brands often promote their products through different modes. which helps” incorrectly separates a dependent clause, while “companies also notices” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “people buys the products,” the verb does not agree with the plural subject. Capitalisation and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent. Aim for shorter, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses carefully; proofread agreement, verb forms, and punctuation.
