IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the contemporary era , it has long been a

subject of discussion about the success of advertisement. Some people observe that advertisement is helping to buy things while others admire that it not necessary to take it serious . In the upcoming paragraphs I will explain both viewpoints and show my own opinion .

Commencing with the former stance , the first and the foremost reason which strikes in my mind is related to awareness about new products. For instance, majority of individuals are facing the problem of hair fall and dandruff. Due to the advertising, people are introduced to many of the shampoos , conditioners and hair masks which are dermatologically tested and proven . Similarly, advertising helps us to getting aware about new products and new researches.

On the other side , people who doesn't want to pay attention to advertising can due to their personal experiences and their logics . Elaborate it in more detail, Deepika Padukone who is an Indian Actress, she did an add of Maggie but she said a lot of time in her interviews that she didn't eat Maggie that's why people feel that the advertisements are not true . In addition, they think people come , advertise anything just for money without any relevant features . As in question said it's very common now so leave it , and don't pay attention.

In conclusion, it is clear that as a coin have two sides similarly advertising also have pros and cons but I'm strongly agree with second stance because those who are advertising this and not following those products they don't have trust on their adds then how can we trust ?

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and state a clear preference for the second: that people have become less trusting of advertising. The shampoo example is relevant to how advertising can introduce products, while the Deepika Padukone example supports scepticism about celebrity endorsements. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view is mainly about awareness rather than how advertising persuades people to purchase, and the second relies heavily on one example without explaining how advertising’s prevalence leads people to ignore it. Your conclusion repeats your position but does not fully resolve the contrast. To strengthen the response, explain the persuasive mechanisms on one side and the effects of overexposure on the other, then connect your examples directly to those points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “Commencing with the former stance” and “On the other side” helps readers follow the intended progression. However, some links are mechanical or unclear, and the reasoning within paragraphs does not always flow smoothly. For example, “Elaborate it in more detail” interrupts the discussion, while “As in question said it's very common now so leave it” does not clearly connect the task’s claim about common advertising to your point. The conclusion’s coin comparison also adds little to the argument. Use clearer topic sentences and link each example to the paragraph’s main claim with explicit explanation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “dermatologically tested,” “personal experiences,” “relevant features,” and “pros and cons.” These choices show an effort to discuss advertising beyond very basic terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “admire that,” “take it serious,” “helping to buy things,” and “an add of Maggie.” Repetition of “advertisement” and “people” also limits flexibility, and some phrases make the intended meaning less precise. Build a more reliable set of expressions for this topic, such as “persuade consumers,” “ignore advertisements,” and “celebrity endorsement,” and check that verbs and nouns combine naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “because,” and “who,” and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors occur frequently and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “people who doesn't want,” “advertising helps us to getting aware,” and “I'm strongly agree”; these show problems with agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction. The sentence beginning “Elaborate it in more detail, Deepika Padukone…” is also incomplete and awkwardly joined to the example. There are additional issues with articles and punctuation, including spaces before commas and full stops. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and divide long or joined sentences into complete units.
