IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Although advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things, i also believe that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Both perspectives have valid argument and this essay is going to discuss on both opinions. I have a neutral opinion on both views.
In my opinion, advertisement has a huge influence on people to buy things . Basically, it has developed the trust with the consumer and demonstrates how their products are safer to use. For example, we have seen ads of Ceat Tyres on many platforms and it had made us believe that it is the most popular brand among other brands . So as consumer, we take our decision on trusted brands . Additionally, marketing team invest their money on popular celebrities where they represent them as brand ambassador of their company , so people gets distracted on them rather than paying attention to the actual detail of the product .
However, some people do not pay any attention towards advertisement as they do smart research on the product and take their decision based on reviews .
Sometimes it is better to do our own research on product rather than blaming celebrities, and our risk can lead to safer investment . For example , buying a car we can't blindly trust on advertisements and we have to do our own research by checking its detail specification and come towards a conclusion .
In conclusion , showing advertisement regularly can influence their decision but it is better to do our own research . In the end , consumer wants sustainable results.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You discuss both views and give examples, including the influence of tyre advertising and the value of researching a car before buying. However, the response only partially fulfils the task: the first view is developed more clearly than the claim that advertising is so common that people ignore it. Your example about consumers researching reviews is relevant, but it does not explain how advertising’s ubiquity leads people to stop noticing it. Your position is also unclear: you say you have a “neutral opinion,” while the conclusion recommends independent research without clearly weighing the two views. The response is 246 words, four words below the 250-word minimum; the 23 words copied from the prompt were not counted. Develop the second view and state a consistent position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “However,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the broad direction. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear. The first body paragraph moves from trust in brands to celebrity endorsements without explaining the connection, and the second shifts from ignoring advertisements to blaming celebrities and then researching a car. Some links are mechanical or imprecise, such as “So as consumer,” and the conclusion repeats the recommendation to research rather than bringing the two views together. Use clearer topic sentences and explain how each example supports its paragraph’s main point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “brand ambassador,” “consumer,” “reviews,” and “specification,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “sustainable results.” However, the range is limited by repetition of “advertisement,” “research,” and “decision,” and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural: “developed the trust with the consumer,” “do smart research,” and “safer investment.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less precise. Aim for more natural combinations, such as “build consumer trust,” “conduct thorough research,” and “a more informed purchase.” Check word forms and spelling as well, including “advertising” versus “advertisement” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a subordinate clause in “Although advertising is extremely successful…” and a conditional idea in the car example. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction occur often enough to limit accuracy. Examples include “Both perspectives have valid argument,” “marketing team invest,” and “people gets distracted.” The sentence beginning “For example, buying a car…” is also incomplete in its construction, while “it had made us believe” uses an awkward tense in this context. Review subject–verb agreement, singular and plural forms, and how to build complete sentences around introductory phrases. More accurate control of these patterns would make your ideas easier to follow.
