IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advertisement helps the sellers to encourage buyers to purchase their products. In recent years, it has been been argued that advertising is extremely successful at persuading people to buy things, while others believe that advertising is so common that individuals are no longer paying attention to it. While I acknowledge both viewpoints, I firmly support the first idea.

On the one hand, advertisement becomes popular in online selling because it persuades people to purchase products. Sellers use it as a clever strategy to encourage customers to buy in their stores. For instance, online sellers post photos and videos of their products on social media platforms, thus, this will give them the opportunity to showcase their goods. Moreover, the use of advertisement whether it is on television or Facebook, can reach people who live in any part of the world. As a result, it will be easier and more convenient to the sellers to sell.

On the other hand, some people are used to seeing many advertisements anywhere. They notice that it is not appealing to costumers anymore because they see it everywhere even in billboards. For example, people who always see advertisement of various products think that it is useless because they can see it not only on social media such as Facebook, Tiktok, Youtube and more, but they can also read it on printed materials on many articles. Due to the rampant use of advertisement, some people are bored with it and think it is not worth it anymore.

In conclusion, although both arguments have merit, I believe that the use of advertisement is still useful in encouraging people to purchase products as it helps them promote their goods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: you acknowledge that advertising can be ignored, but support the view that it still persuades people. The two body paragraphs are relevant, with examples involving social media, television and billboards. However, the first view is explained mainly through sellers’ ability to display and distribute products; it would be stronger to show more directly how advertising changes consumers’ decisions or prompts purchases. The opposing view is also somewhat general: seeing advertisements frequently is said to make people bored, but the effect on their buying behaviour is not explored. Develop each argument with a clearer explanation of cause and effect, and make your own position more fully reasoned.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your opinion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and examples are placed with the relevant arguments. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger control through paragraphing and sequencing. At times, however, links feel mechanical, and some references are unclear. For example, “thus, this will give them” repeats the connection rather than expressing it smoothly, while “it” in “think that it is useless” could refer to advertising or a particular advertisement. Use more precise referencing and vary how you connect explanations and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “persuading,” “showcase,” “appealing,” and “rampant use,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to discuss advertising across different media. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “advertisement” is repeatedly used where “advertising” is more natural for the general activity, and “encourage customers to buy in their stores” does not fit the online-selling example particularly well. “Costumers” is a spelling error for “customers,” and “Tiktok” and “Youtube” need standard capitalisation. Build precision by choosing natural collocations and varying repeated terms, for example “influence purchasing decisions” or “promote products to a wider audience.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the introduction (“While I acknowledge both viewpoints”) and a relative clause in the example about people who see advertisements. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. The opening contains the duplicated form “has been been argued”; “the use of advertisement whether it is on television or Facebook, can reach” has awkward clause punctuation and agreement; and “it will be easier and more convenient to the sellers to sell” has an incorrect preposition pattern. There are also article and number issues in phrases such as “advertisement of various products.” Review verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries, while retaining the complex structures you already attempt.
