IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Few individuals believe that advertisement plays an cricial role for people to take things while some say they can be seen eveywhwre that no one even bothers to pay attention to them and think of them as a source of information to buy anythimg .I concur with the notion that majority of the people don not pay attention to them nowadays because of the over exposure of them everywhere whether it is on phone or walls and panaflexes .

Firstly a group of individuals that believe that it encourages peoples to buy things are somehow correct because there are many people with habits of reading things around them while travelling or mostly walking for instance a deacade earlier people used to spend less time on their phoneor on internet so because of thatphysical advertisement played huge role in shopping and seemed as a marking strategy and it fascinated quite a bunch of people.Quite a number of people used to get fascinated by their brightened color and fascinating design thus they encouraged quite a number of individuals to shop .

On the other hand people that think of these advertisements as an unimportant things are right in the position because they are so overly shows and buying certain things requires a alot of consideration and interest because of over exposure makes people to interest and see them as nuicance and get irritated by them often .

In my opinion over exposure reduced the function of adverstiment and make it seems like a distraction and headache to some people

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state your position: you accept that advertising can encourage purchases, but conclude that its overexposure means many people ignore it. The examples about people noticing advertisements while travelling and the earlier influence of physical advertising are relevant. However, the first view is only partly developed, and the explanation of why people now ignore adverts is unclear in places—for example, “buying certain things requires a alot of consideration and interest” does not clearly show how this supports your point. Your opinion is present, but the conclusion is brief and largely repeats the introduction. To strengthen the response, explain each view more fully and make the link between each example and your argument explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “Firstly” and “On the other hand” help signal the change in perspective, and the main position can be followed. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to track because several ideas are joined into long sentences, particularly in the paragraph beginning “Firstly a group of individuals.” Some connections are also unclear, such as the move from people spending less time on phones to physical advertising’s influence. Use clearer sentence boundaries and organise each paragraph around one main claim, followed by an explanation and a directly relevant example. This would make the existing structure more coherent and reduce the effort needed to follow the reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “over exposure,” “source of information,” “marketing strategy,” and “distraction.” There are also attempts to vary expression, such as “fascinated” and “irritated.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or awkward choices make parts of the argument harder to understand: “advertisement plays an…role,” “overly shows,” and “see them as nuisance” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “eveywhwre,” “deacade,” and “adverstiment” are noticeable, while repeated use of “people,” “things,” and “quite a number” limits precision. Build a bank of accurate topic collocations and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because” and “while,” and the reader can generally identify your main position. However, complex sentences are often faulty or difficult to follow. For example, the opening sentence lacks clear sentence boundaries, and “over exposure makes people to interest” has an incorrect verb pattern. There are frequent problems with articles, agreement, plurals, and verb forms, as in “an unimportant things,” “it encourages peoples,” and “over exposure reduced.” Punctuation and spacing also make some sentences run together. Practise writing shorter, controlled sentences first, then combine ideas using accurate subordinate clauses; check subject–verb agreement and verb patterns when editing.
