IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that purchasing habit are controlled by advertisement , while others can't accept this theory . In this essay I will discuss both concept and share my opinion.
Advertising plays a crucial role for a product and specially for new products. People tends to buy familiar product for their daily use and also items that provides good economic value and quality. Advertisement provide those information for customers. Through regular marketing a new product can also become a well -known product and it became familiar among customers. For example, A consumer wants to buy a fan but he don't know any brand, in that case a tv commercial may help him to choose a brand .
On the other hand, advertisement sometimes give overhyped description of a product ,which effect the credibility of the product . This practice became common in recent days. For that purpose customers loss their trust on advertisement and rely more on personal experience and product details during shopping. For instance, some facial cream advertise as a skin brightening product. But they can not luminate a natural skin . Though at first customers believed those news ,after experiencing those products they was able to learn the truth and loss their trust over that products. This types of things become common in advertisement that, people don't buy things only by relying on advertisement.
Finally, though advertising has its pros and cons , I firmly believe that in this modern era it is a essential source for making connection between products and consumers . Additionally , a good advertisement always persuade the customers towards the product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear final opinion: advertising can connect products with consumers, although exaggerated claims can undermine trust. The first view is supported with the example of a television commercial helping an unfamiliar fan brand become known; the second is illustrated through facial creams that fail to deliver promised results. These examples are relevant, but the discussion is unevenly developed. The argument that advertising persuades people to buy is mainly about providing information and familiarity, rather than explaining how it influences purchasing decisions. Your conclusion also introduces the claim that a good advertisement persuades customers without fully reconciling it with your point about people ignoring advertising. Develop the mechanisms behind each view and make your position consistent throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “Finally” make the direction of the discussion easy to follow, and the examples are placed alongside the relevant arguments. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, links within paragraphs can be mechanical, and some references are unclear—for example, “those news” does not clearly identify the claims being discussed, while “This types of things” is an awkward link back to the example. Improve progression by making each sentence’s connection explicit and varying transitions rather than relying mainly on standard signposts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “purchasing habit,” “economic value,” “credibility,” “personal experience,” and “consumers.” This gives you enough language to discuss advertising and consumer behaviour, but the range and control are limited by repeated or imprecise expressions. Phrases such as “overhyped description,” “loss their trust,” and “luminate a natural skin” are either awkwardly collocated or unclear, and “advertisement” is repeated frequently where “advertising” or “advertisements” would be more natural. Spelling and word-form slips, including “well -known” and “brightening,” also affect accuracy. Build a more precise set of topic collocations and check whether each chosen word fits its grammatical and semantic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional example (“if a consumer wants to buy a fan…”) and a contrast introduced by “though.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur across the response. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “People tends” and “Advertisement provide,” article and number errors in “a essential source” and “familiar product,” and incorrect verb forms in “they was able” and “he don't know.” Punctuation and spacing around commas and full stops are also inconsistent. These errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your argument, but they reduce accuracy. Practise agreement, articles, plural forms, and past-tense consistency, then proofread each sentence for these patterns.
