IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often discussed how advertising of products increases its demand. While many people think that advertising has become so common that people no longer pay attention to it, I disagree with this statement.

Everything is available online now and people can check reviews of a product before buying. Most of the brands are spending a considerable amount on their marketing and it has result in increase demand of their products. For example, my friend who likes to spend money on beauty products, bought a lipstick because of seeing its reels and reviews on social media. Digital marketing has been one of the most effective ways to promote buisnesses. When people see their favourite celebrities who are promoting a brand, they want to buy its product. Even many resturants are running successfully because they promote their asthetic ambience which brings more customers.

There are many examples where advertising has been helpful for a brand but there are some people who are not influenced by these trends or marketing. Especially, the older population, they are not easily impressed by good advertisments. A buisness is only successful when they focus on their quality and prices along their marketing. Trends are changing so fast now that many people have become immune to them. They no longer want to buy everything they see.

In conclusion, while there is a proportion of people who do not get influenced by advertisments because they have become so common, the propotion of people who still buys products because of advertisments overweigh them. The main priority of any buisness should be the quality of their products as only good reviews will bring them customers again.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and make your position clear: you disagree that advertising has lost its influence, and your conclusion reinforces this by saying more people still buy products because of advertising. The examples of social-media promotion, celebrities and restaurants are relevant and help explain why advertising can work. However, the opposing view is less fully developed: the point that older people are less impressed is asserted rather than explained, and the idea that people have become immune to trends is not clearly reconciled with your overall position. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely when advertising is ignored and why its influence still outweighs that effect.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from online reviews and social-media marketing to the counterargument is generally easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “For example,” “Especially,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the discussion. At times, however, connections between ideas are abrupt: the opening claim about online reviews does not clearly lead into the point about brands’ spending, and “Especially, the older population” is not smoothly integrated into its sentence. The conclusion also repeats the main position without fully resolving the contrast. Use clearer links to show how each example supports the paragraph’s central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “marketing,” “promote,” “influenced,” “trends,” and “quality,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “digital marketing” and “a considerable amount.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “it has result in increase demand” and “the proportion … overweigh them” do not express the intended meaning naturally. Spelling errors such as “buisnesses,” “resturants,” “asthetic,” and “advertisments” also reduce accuracy. Build precision by checking common collocations and spelling, and choose exact terms for comparisons, such as saying one group “outnumbers” another.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening with “While” and a relative clause in “my friend who likes to spend money on beauty products.” Most sentences communicate the intended ideas, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “it has result in increase demand” has problems with verb form and article use, while “the proportion of people … who still buys” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “Especially, the older population” is also a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Review verb forms, agreement, and sentence completeness, and revise these examples into full, accurate sentences while retaining your varied structures.
