IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There's a continuos debate on going on wether you should spend on advertising to scale your business or not. I think a strategic approach is required to overcome this problem.

Advertising helps you in growing your business in numerous ways, but the fact is that you should provide the quality as mentioned or shown in your adds. In today's era social media has become crucial in every persons life and running your campaigns on the social media platforms will engage more audience, but you need to be strategic and satisfy your customers need. For instance being a girl, I'm always intrigude in buying skincare products which has good reviews on the website.

Conversely if your ad is so boring that it fails to fascinate the customers, in this case there's might be chances of no user activity. For example a small grocery store posting the random stuff which is available almost everywhere will leading to poor results. Also running your ads on platforms like youtube where someone may be trying to focus on something, he\she probably select not interested in this.

In my opinion a strategic approach is required, a good outcome demands a high investment. This a one time payment, if you spend it in a good way your bussiness grow in only few days. Requesting the customer's to give a feedback to influence others, whereas the people who find it broing just needs to change their way and see how it works. Everything has positive and adverse effects but the real thing is how we adopt it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views regarding the effectiveness of advertising and provides a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. The arguments regarding 'strategic approaches' are repetitive and lack depth, often veering into general business advice rather than focusing on the psychological impact of advertising on consumers. While the prompt asks to discuss whether advertising is persuasive or ignored, the essay focuses more on how businesses should run ads. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments are not fully extended, leading to a tendency to over-generalize. To improve, ensure each paragraph directly addresses the specific prompt question rather than offering general business tips.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression between ideas is sometimes mechanical. While there are attempts at cohesive devices (e.g., 'Conversely', 'For instance'), the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and abrupt transitions. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the third paragraph where the connection between the grocery store example and the broader argument about consumer attention is weak. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive to ensure that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring clear topic sentences would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors (e.g., 'continuos', 'wether', 'adds', 'intrigude', 'bussiness', 'broing') and some awkward collocations (e.g., 'posting the random stuff'). While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary, the range is limited, and the errors occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the content. To achieve a higher score, the student should focus on accurate spelling and expanding their repertoire of academic collocations, moving away from informal or imprecise phrasing like 'random stuff' or 'good reviews'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the people... needs to change'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'will leading to'), and punctuation errors (e.g., missing commas, incorrect apostrophes in 'customer's'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, the student should focus on mastering basic sentence construction, particularly subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy would also help raise the band score.
