IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Since so many decades advertising was the main stream activity that led to selling of various things successfully, Even still today advertisements are equally important to gain good customers. In my opinion its not the advertisement that people ignore but the type of advertisement which are being done.

On the one hand, since a long time advertisements are the only things that people can know about a product where it shows the benefits and usage, thus encouraging people to buy it. For example there is a cool drink called campa at first it was known by none. But what campa did was they made an poster advertising there beverage showing various flavors in their drinks and distributed it across people through various channels that led to success in selling the product.

on the other hand now a days people aren't falling for the typical advertisements because as time changed peoples attention got decreased, so here we have to implement different styles of advertisement to make people purchase, in recent time people are trusting social media influencers more than the company which is manufacturing, So what industries are doing is they are following a different marketing strategy to grab customers which is by paying influencers and make them promote it such that customers can buy it.

To conclude its not the advertisement that have failed from grabbing the customers but the type of advertisements have changed so by changing strategies while advertising could really help any one for getting correct amount of customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The example of the 'Campa' drink is relevant but lacks sufficient detail to fully support the argument. The discussion on social media influencers is a good modern example, but the explanation of why traditional advertising is ignored could be more deeply explored. The essay meets the minimum length requirement, but the arguments remain at a surface level. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more nuanced analysis and ensure that the link between your examples and the prompt is more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the transition 'on the other hand' is used, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the opening sentence which lacks a clear connection to the rest of the paragraph. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on common phrases like 'good customers' and 'various things', which are quite generic. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'main stream activity' (mainstream) and 'advertisement which are being done' (which are being used). To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to marketing and consumer behaviour, such as 'brand awareness', 'targeted campaigns', or 'consumer engagement'. This will help demonstrate a more sophisticated control of language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('Since so many decades advertising was'), missing articles, and punctuation errors (e.g., comma splices). The sentence structure is often repetitive, and the lack of consistent subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the type of advertisements have changed') is a recurring issue. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like subject-verb agreement and article usage before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
