IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Advertisements are a key marketing tool that help in establishing brand image and convey information about the products to the public. While, different characteristics of ads like color or orientation have worked scientifically to persuade consumer to buy, people's interest toward them has slowly started to fade. This essay will discuss both opinions and argue in favour of the latter which suggests advertisements have slowly become obsolete and unable to gain consumers.

On the one hand, advertisements are based on psychology and have the ability to attract people. This is because, there are a variety of science that go into making advertisements such as colors, music, storyline, fonts and pace depending on their types, which often correlate with the attention and focus of humans. Children are a perfect example of this, as something colorful and containing joyful music successfully grabs their attention, while a advertisement with simple dialogues between two people about a product does not appeal such age range. Furthermore, by addition of phrases involving sale or discounts, advertisements can further motivate people into purchasing a product, and serves as a great marketing tool.

On the other hand, it is indeed true that the exposure to advertisements has grown rapidly becoming over saturated to the point where people no longer react to them. Currently, there are a variety of ads in different forms such as pop-ups, poster ads, video and image based advertisements and many more. With these many being displayed to consumer on daily basis, skipping advertisements has become a norm. For instance, despite YouTube placing advertisements on almost every videos, people either skip too quicky or enable ad blocker software. So it is correct to say that more advertisements at present are not necessarily good promotions strategy as people have developed habits to avoiding them.

To sum up, historically advertisements have solely been the key to the sales and marketing. While proponents exist and stand with the view about their credibility at the present, I wholly believe that people have become numb to advertisements.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Your ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the example of YouTube ad-blockers to illustrate the saturation of advertising. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully developed; for instance, the point about children could be expanded to explain why their psychological susceptibility is different from adults. Overall, the position is consistent and the task requirements are met effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'To sum up' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the awkward phrasing 'While, different characteristics...' at the start. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'brand image', 'over saturated', and 'marketing tool' are used appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'gain consumers' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'a advertisement' (a grammatical error affecting lexical accuracy). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions. The current range is adequate for the task, but more variety in academic vocabulary would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several recurring grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('a advertisement'), subject-verb agreement issues ('a variety of science that go into'), and punctuation errors (the comma after 'While'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic articles and pluralization will significantly improve your accuracy. You have the ability to construct complex sentences, but they need more consistent control.
