IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Advertising plays a crucial role in modern life. It is widely used by companies to promote their products and services. While some people believe that advertisements influence people to buy things, other individuals argue that advertisements are no longer relevant and they do not pay much attention. This essay will discuss both views, and I believe that advertising is still effective.

On the one hand, many people think advertising is a very successful way to influence people to buy products. Some companies use attractive pictures, famous celebrities and special offers to catch people's attention. As a result of this, many customers become interested in products and decide to buy them. For example, many people buy a new phone or clothes after watching advertisements on social media or television. Therefore, advertising has a great impact on the sales of any products ,as it gives the initial impression of the products.

On the other hand, some people believe that ads are everywhere and thus they give very less importance. Nowadays, people see advertisements on social media, television, websites and on public transport. As a result, they often ignore or skip them. For instance, many people watch YouTube reviews before making a purchase beauty products because they trust real users rather than advertisements.

In my opinion, advertising is still an effective way to influence people and powerful marketing tool. Many individuals ignore advertisements because they see them every day. As, it is something which will never go out of trend and it is the most effective way of marketing the product and that is why it is still thriving.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development in the final paragraph is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the argument that advertising is 'something which will never go out of trend' is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific reasoning or examples to support your opinion, rather than simply restating that it is effective. Overall, the position is clear throughout the essay, and the task requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. You use cohesive devices like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'As a result of this' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'As a result'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that the flow between sentences is more natural would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'crucial role', 'initial impression', and 'thriving'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'give very less importance' (should be 'pay less attention' or 'attach less importance') and 'marketing tool' (missing an article). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing, such as using 'products' multiple times in close proximity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'give very less importance' and 'before making a purchase beauty products' (missing a preposition). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the spacing before commas and the sentence fragment 'As, it is something...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor grammatical slips would be beneficial.
