IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people believe that advertisements are the reason consumers are encouraged to buy products, while some other think that due to their widespread presence advertisements are ineffective. This essay will discuss both the views and explain why I believe advertisements have a strong impact on purchasing decisions.
Due to the social media or multimedia consumption becoming a major part of our day-to-day lives, various organisations focus on advertising their products through various platforms. Audience on social media usually follows the trends, be it dance, music or products and because of this, the organisations hire influencers or actors to do a paid campaign for their products. For instance, the number of users watching gaming vlogs in a single day is more than the number consuming newspaper everyday, which makes such users an easy audience for game betting advertisements. But, due to a rise in the number of influencers based content and fraud advertisements, every other content on the social media seems like a paid campaign making people identifying and ignoring such content, a part of their reflexes.
On the other hand, advertisements in the digital era can help companies attract most number of consumers who are already interested in the category of their product. This helps because instead of spending on advertisements to random 100 users with different interests, targeting the customers who are mostly consuming content related to the category of your product makes the advertisement more effective. For example, an influencer posting educational content on instagram can easily help attract the customers who are interest in educational platforms or devices. This way advertisements can even attract the customers who are just consuming the relevant content and are not thinking of buying anything.
In conclusion, advertisements in the modern times have changed how people decide on purchasing particular products. Social media, influencers backing the product can change the decisions of the customers that traditional advertisements couldn't. Hence, making advertisements a strong factor for deciding which product should be bought.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, particularly the discussion on targeted digital advertising. However, the development of the second view (that advertising is ignored) is slightly underdeveloped compared to the first. While the essay presents a clear position, some arguments could be more thoroughly supported with deeper analysis rather than just examples. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'Due to', 'For instance', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is occasional awkwardness in the flow between sentences, such as in the second paragraph where the link between gaming vlogs and betting could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The range of vocabulary is sufficient for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'widespread presence', 'multimedia consumption', and 'targeted'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'influencers based content' instead of 'influencer-based content' and 'making people identifying' instead of 'making people identify'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended meaning clearly throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, but there are several recurring errors, such as 'some other think' (should be 'some others think') and 'the number of users... is more than the number consuming newspaper everyday' (should be 'newspapers every day'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentences are slightly clunky. While the errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score.
