IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, more and more brands spend a lot of capital in the advertisement and it is argued by some sectors of society that this is merely a waste of money, now no one pays attention to adds, while others argue that this is a good approach and is very beneficial to raise the revenue of a company. As a matter of fact, both aspects have their own importance and benefits, ultimately, I am concerned over branding and acknowledge that this aspect is far more substantial and more practical.
Today, companies spend huge amount of money in branding and advertising their product and some argue that this amount could be invested in company rather than wasting in advertising. But it is said by our elder: what is seen, sells. This is fundamental argument passed by them. These adds plays very crucial role in the selling of products. For instance, if an actor or influencer of K-pop and Hollywood star wears a shirt or any other item in TV show or in a live podcast, on the spot that shirt, that wear will go famous due to the involvement of social media in our life.
Additionally, there are million of ways and opportunities for a brand to promote its product. For instance, most of the people nowadays, wear only those clothes which are in trend and usually, people buy these products by being influenced from social media influencers.
However, there is a group of people who argue that people now do not pay such attention to adds it because nowadays we see add on every corner, on every page of media, so people usually, like to skip these adds.
In conclusion, despite the valid arguments placed by opponents regarding the advertisement, I am still convinced that branding is very crucial and its overarching benefits are more substantial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding 'what is seen, sells' is mentioned but not deeply explored, and the example of K-pop stars is a bit anecdotal. To reach a higher band, you should provide more analytical depth rather than just listing examples. The conclusion is clear, but the overall structure of the argument could be more balanced, as the second view (that advertising is ignored) is given significantly less space and development than the first view.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'However' to signal shifts in the argument. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between ideas is more explicitly stated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'overarching benefits', 'substantial', and 'persuading'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'spend a lot of capital in the advertisement' (should be 'on advertising') and 'these adds plays' (should be 'these ads play'). There is also some repetition of basic words like 'adds' and 'people'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid informal phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('these adds plays'), articles ('in the advertisement'), and pluralisation ('million of ways'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your point, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and article usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
