IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Opinions differ regarding the value of advertising to people. While there are reasonable arguments supporting each view, neither perspective fully explains the complexity of this matter. Examining both views provides a clearer understanding of the matter.

One compelling argument in favor of advertising is that apart from reminding people about the existence of a certain product, it is also a good way to introduce new products in the market. Thus being extremely successful at persuading individuals to buy things. For example, Citizen TV, usually advertise KFC products, initially people in Kenya did not know about the existence of this products. After continuous advertising, some became interested to buy them. Since this was the first company to offer delivery services, it attracted a lot of customers, and because the products where of higher quality, they continued to buy them especially after watching the advert. Therefore, advertising can be extremely important at persuading people to buy things.

Nevertheless, it would be unrealistic to overlook the fact that continuous publicity can become boring and so common that people may no longer pay attention to it. For example, the first soap powder which was called OMO attracted several buyers after being advertised. The company maintained the same type of advert for several years and finally it became so common and finally failed persuading customers.

To conclude, although publicity can be successful at persuading people to buy things, repeating the same advert for several years can be boring and people may not pay attention to it. In my view, companies should keep changing their adverts to attract customers attention.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the role of advertising in introducing new products versus the issue of consumer fatigue. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. The examples provided, while illustrative, are quite specific and could be expanded to show a broader understanding of the topic. The position is consistent throughout, but the essay would benefit from a more nuanced exploration of why advertising might be perceived as 'successful' or 'ignored' in different contexts. Overall, it meets the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'For example', and 'Therefore' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph is functional but could be more sophisticated. The referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'publicity', 'persuading', and 'consumer'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'failed persuading' instead of 'failed to persuade'. The use of less common lexical items is infrequent. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of vocabulary to avoid repetition of words like 'advert' and 'advertising'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'products where of higher quality' (should be 'were') and 'failed persuading' (should be 'failed to persuade'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are some minor issues with sentence fragments or run-on sentences. The control of grammar is sufficient to communicate the message, but the frequency of errors prevents a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement would improve the score.
