IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Advertisements are the most significant part of publising a product and many people beleive that it is must if anyone want to sell their products and wants to be on the top in the competitive market. While, some people believe that there is no need to pay any attention to it. I will discuss both the points through this essay and also give my opinion at last.

In modren era of technology, if anyone wants to publish their products or business, then by advertising it with the help of social media is must. Many product or business owners collaborates with the popular celebrities for advertising their products so that they get more buyers. Because when any famous person is advertising something then their fans would also follow them by doing the same thing. For example, I love MS Dhoni, once he was in a advertisement of a brand of water bottle. After watching him in that advertisement I got so curious about that brand and now I also love to drink water of that brand.

Nowadays, many businesses became successfull just because they advertise their products more than their competitors. More than 70% of population in the whole world uses social media in today's time, and all the platforms allows businesses to run their advertisements by taking some amount of commission. But it all covered when the people got interest while watching the advertisement to buy that product.

In conclusion, I would like to say that if anyone wants to become successful in their life through their business they must have to advertise their business and people also should have to pay attention to the advertisements.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses both views, but the development is uneven. While you provide a personal example regarding celebrity endorsements, the second viewpoint—that advertising is ignored—is not explored in any depth. The prompt asks you to discuss both views, but you focus almost exclusively on why advertising is successful. To reach a higher band, you must provide a balanced discussion, perhaps by explaining why some consumers develop 'ad blindness' or find marketing intrusive. Your position is clear, but the supporting arguments lack the depth required for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For example, starting a sentence with 'While,' as a conjunction without a main clause following it, or using 'But it all covered' creates confusion. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the transition between the second and third paragraphs. Improving the use of linking words such as 'furthermore,' 'conversely,' or 'consequently' would help create a smoother flow between your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it is often repetitive and lacks precision. You frequently use basic terms like 'products' and 'business' without varying your language. There are also errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'publising' instead of 'publishing' and 'beleive' instead of 'believe'. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to marketing, such as 'consumer behaviour,' 'brand awareness,' or 'targeted advertising.' Expanding your range of synonyms will help you express your ideas with more sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'all the platforms allows'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'many businesses became successfull'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'they must have to advertise'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While your meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic tense consistency and pluralisation.
