IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the contemporary world, advertisements play an crucial role in our day to day life. Some individuals claimed that advertisements widely convinced people to purchase products or services. On the other hand, some believed that it is common thing in nowadays, and people less bother about it. In this essay, I will elucidate both views and present my opinion on this.

To begin with, it creates desire and human emotions. Companies show ads on TV, YouTube, Instagram, websites, newspapers, etc. to make people want to buy something, even when they may not originally need it. For instance, a person might want to buy a head massager, even though they do not actually need it at that particular time. Repeated advertisements can make them realize the potential benefits of the product and eventually convince them to make an unnecessary purchase. Therefore, Marketing campaigns play with human emotions and create desire to buy that product.

Conversely, overloaded campaigns and advertisements can reduce their effectiveness because people are exposed to promotional content on a daily basis. When people see too many advertisements every day, they become used to them and start ignoring them. Therefore, advertisements may not influence their buying decisions as strongly. For example, when people use YouTube, Instagram or other websites, they frequently see advertisements between videos or posts. After seeing similar advertisements repeatedly, they may simply skip them without paying attention. Therefore, excessive advertising can make promotional campaigns less effective.

In conclusion, advertisements effectively influence people's emotions and their desires. However, excessive exposure to promotional content can cause people to ignore advertisements. In my opinion, advertising remains an effective marketing tool, but its influence depends on how frequently and creatively it is presented.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You have discussed both views—that advertising is persuasive and that it is ignored due to saturation—and provided a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the head massager and the use of social media platforms. To reach a higher band, ensure that your position is more clearly stated in the introduction rather than just stating you will 'elucidate' the views. Additionally, while the ideas are logical, they could be developed with more depth or nuance to fully explore the implications of the arguments presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Conversely,' and 'Therefore' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'Therefore' at the start of sentences. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'contemporary world,' 'promotional content,' and 'marketing tool' are used appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'an crucial role' (should be 'a crucial') and 'some individuals claimed' (should be 'claim' to match the present tense context). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'some individuals claimed' and 'some believed' should be in the present tense to match the general nature of the topic. You also have minor errors with articles and verb forms, such as 'it is common thing' (should be 'a common thing') and 'people less bother about it' (should be 'people are less bothered by it'). Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve your score in this criterion.
