IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advertising plays a significant role in both shopping malls and online shopping platforms because they easy influence customers to buy products. Some people believe that many people purchase items because of appealing advertisements, while others argue that it has became common and it is unnecessary to pay attention on the advertisements anymore. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my opinion.

On the one hand, some people think that advertising has already became successful as it attracts many people's attention. For instance, social media such as Facebook and YouTube often display advertisements about different types of products to the users, which enhance their curiosity towards the product and they scroll the websites without necessity. As a consequence, they purchase items without actually needing them. In addition, bloggers often make content for marketing and influence viewers to make a purchase. As a result, it does not only led to a waste money but also a waste of time.

On the other hand, from social media through television to bloggers, advertising has already became normal. Because all the platforms generally advertise not only about products but also about businesses. For example, there are several kinds of advertisements such as about household items, clothing or electronic devices and promotional advertisements such as about movie trailer, drama or business. As a result, advertising has already became as usual to the people and some people think that due to flexibility of advertisements, people are not interested to see and pay attention to it.

In my opinion, both views are almost right. Some people are often influenced by colorful and creative advertisements and buy products without thinking. In contrast, because of a huge advertisement many people become already used to it and eventually they are conscious about the advertisement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention social media and bloggers as examples of persuasive advertising, the explanation of why people might ignore advertising is less developed and relies on repetitive phrasing. To improve, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with clear reasoning rather than just listing examples. Your position is stated in the introduction and conclusion, but the analysis in the body paragraphs could be more nuanced to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition' to signal transitions. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the third paragraph where the connection between 'flexibility of advertisements' and the lack of interest is not fully explained. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'persuading', 'curiosity', and 'promotional'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'they easy influence' (should be 'easily influence') and 'huge advertisement' (should be 'volume of advertising'). Additionally, the repetition of the phrase 'advertising has already became' (grammatically incorrect) limits your score. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you are using the correct word forms to convey your ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Specifically, there is a recurring issue with verb tense and auxiliary usage, such as 'has already became' (should be 'has already become') and 'it does not only led to' (should be 'it not only leads to'). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage also require attention, for example, 'pay attention on' (should be 'pay attention to'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score.
