IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

While some people believe that advertising has become one of the most effective ways to persuade people to purchase products, others argue that its effects does not affect everyone equally, as many no longer pay attention to it. While I acknowledge that advertising may not have the same effect on all people, I believe that it still has a significant impact on people's purchasing decisions.

On the one hand, advertising plays a crucial role in sales. Many multinational countries invest a significant proportion of their budgets on marketing strategies, which help them increase their revenue significantly. Through Social media platforms, television commercials and collaborations with influencers allow companies to promote their products. As a result, consumers are effectively persuaded to purchase products even if they do not need them and may otherwise not consider. For instance, individuals often replance clothes, digital devices and household appliance that are still completely functioning simply to keep up with modern changing trends, negatively affecting their personal finances.

On the other hand, advertising does not have the same effect on all people. Many individuals who have developed strong financial skills, such as saving and investing money, allowing them to increse their financial resources considerably. Similarly, some people do not have the same exposure to advertising, especially those older generations who do not frequently use technology compared with young people. As a result, these groups of individuals may not be affected by the powerfull persuation effects of advertising.

In my opinion, people have not the same exposure to advertising, while other avoid spending money in unnecessary products because they prefer to invest. However, advertising has a strong impact on most people, as a larger proportion of them are heavely expose to advertisements, especially on the internet. Therefore, I think there are more people who are heavely persuaded than advertising strategies than those who are not.

In conclusion, although many people may be out of reach of advertising and have developed a strong mindset, there are still millions of people who are easily persuaded by these strategies. By making purchasing decisions mindfully and avoiding unneccesary spending, people can reduce the negative effects of advertising.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion on multinational marketing budgets and the influence of financial literacy. However, the development is slightly uneven; the second body paragraph could have been more effectively linked to the prompt's specific mention of 'advertising being so common that we no longer pay attention to it.' While the position is consistent, some arguments, particularly in the conclusion, are slightly repetitive. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'On the one hand,' 'Similarly,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the awkward phrasing in the final paragraph: 'there are more people who are heavely persuaded than advertising strategies than those who are not.' Despite these minor lapses, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is clear, justifying a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for the expression of ideas with some precision. There are attempts to use less common items like 'multinational,' 'financial literacy,' and 'persuasion.' However, there are several spelling errors ('replance,' 'increse,' 'powerfull,' 'persuation,' 'heavely,' 'unneccesary') and some awkward collocations ('multinational countries' instead of 'multinational corporations'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider range of precise vocabulary to reach a higher band. The current level is consistent with Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, but these are frequently marred by grammatical errors. Examples include 'its effects does not affect' (subject-verb agreement), 'people have not the same exposure' (incorrect negation), and 'avoid spending money in unnecessary products' (preposition error). While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The control of grammar is sufficient for a Band 6.0, as the errors rarely impede the reader's understanding.
