IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some population argue that advertising the product is significantly successful at persuading us, while others interpret that advertising is widespread that individuals would not believe it no longer. I will discuss both sides.

On the one hand, today's fast moving world, technology has been improving more widely among countries, especially ai, following the quality of advertisement. Ai is replacing our jobs even the company factory that ameliorates the merchant's ability to advertise products greatly and persuasively. Nowadays, the citizens have sufficient awareness about numerous things in real life and interpretation to see something. So the marketing is becoming essential for corporations that are in business market.

On the other hand, if the product is not perfect but effective enough for customers, which is more likely not to known for its marketing or advertisement but has high chance to be known due to its quality and price. Since I was a child, the public tended to buy products whose marketing had boomed, nevertheless now population usually purchase things by its use of long-term and value because they have more knowledge and information than in the past. In addition, sometimes, the popular celebrities from any factors such as the sport, design, content creators, even the positive ones are successful to sell products since they are respected and rewarded by citizens.

In conclusion, despite the fact that the significant factor to sell products might advertising them, in my view, the quality, price and even the reputation can affect the purchases more widely and longer.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding AI and advertising is not clearly linked to the prompt's core question about persuasion versus indifference. The second body paragraph attempts to contrast marketing with product quality, but the logic is slightly disjointed, particularly the transition regarding celebrity endorsements. While the task is addressed, the ideas lack the depth and analytical rigor required for a higher band. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments would benefit from more specific examples and clearer logical progression.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand' and 'In addition,' but they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately, such as the use of 'So' to start a sentence. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the connection between celebrity influence and the previous argument about product quality is abrupt. While the overall progression is discernible, the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, which impacts the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'Some population argue' instead of 'Some people argue' and 'interpret that advertising is widespread' which does not fit the context. Phrases like 'boomed' and 'any factors such as the sport' are imprecise. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'corporations' and 'marketing,' the overall range is limited, and the errors in collocation occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the content.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it' (which was the prompt, but the student wrote 'individuals would not believe it no longer'), and 'even the company factory that ameliorates the merchant's ability.' Subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the marketing is becoming essential') and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'by its use of long-term and value') are common. While the meaning is generally understood, the frequency of errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
