IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advertising plays an important role in modern society. While some people believe that advertising strongly influences consumers to buy things, others argue that it has become so common that people tend to ignore it. In this essay, I will discuss both the views and give my opinion at the end.

On the one hand, advertising can be highly effective in convincing people to purchase products. This is because advertisements featuring celebrities or attractive posters can easily catch people's attention and encourage them to buy products. Furthermore, by having discounts for products they get influence to buy products as well as some emotional messages are driven in their phone which made them to buy. For example, a famous celebrity may advertise cosmetic products, which can influence their followers to purchase them. As a result, companies can increase their sales by using popular celebrities in their advertisements.

On the other hand, many people believe that advertising has become so common that they tend to ignore it. This is because advertisements are everywhere, so people become bored with seeing them on television and mobile phones. For example, people often skip advertisements while watching videos online because they find them repetitive and uninteresting. Therefore, advertisements may have less influence on people's purchasing decisions.

In conclusion, although advertising can influence people to buy products, many people have become less interested in advertisements because they see them so frequently. In my opinion, advertising remains an effective way of influencing consumers' purchasing decisions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the response is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped; for instance, the point about 'emotional messages' is vague and lacks sufficient explanation. To improve, you should expand on your supporting examples to ensure a more comprehensive discussion. The position is clear, but the brevity prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, as the development of ideas is restricted by the word count.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression of ideas is somewhat simplistic due to the limited length of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'purchasing decisions' and 'consumers.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is some repetition of basic words like 'products' and 'buy.' To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations. For example, instead of repeating 'buy products,' you could use 'acquire goods' or 'consumer spending.' There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'they get influence to buy products' and 'which made them to buy.' These errors, while not preventing understanding, indicate a lack of full control over complex structures. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of infinitive versus gerund forms. Increasing the variety of your sentence structures will also help demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
