IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
According to some people, advertising is very appealing for them to buy stuff. Others think that, it is very common and they do not give attention to advertisements. This essay will discuss both of the point of views and then I will come to a conclusion.
First of all, advertisement is a good way to reach the targeted consumers The consumers get to know about the product and it's specifications and they want to buy it if it is needed. Therefore, some people finds advertisement successful. Advertisement from television channels and social media plays a important role in this. However, sometimes by watching ads, people buy such things which have no use in their life after buying it.
On the contrary, Sometimes advertisements can be repetitive and irritating. One products' advertisement can be seen many times in television and social media that it gets negative impressions. Also, the quality of a advertisements' concept or theme is very much essential for the consumers. It is the reason of those person's not giving attention thinking that, advertisement is common. Nevertheless, just by avoiding advertisements they often do not get to know about a product, that could be useful for them.
To conclude, I think both of the point of views have their own credibility. That's why, I am proposing a hybrid solution. Advertisement agencies should bring up variations in their ads and repetition of ads should be avoided. Also, customers should have the knowledge about the product market by watching ads one or two times. But consider buying only the necessary products. Thus, the both parties' interests will be safeguarded.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion, meeting the requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the argument regarding why people ignore advertisements is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of psychological or societal factors. The conclusion introduces a 'hybrid solution' which is a creative way to express an opinion, but it lacks depth in its justification. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more specific examples or deeper analysis for each viewpoint rather than listing general observations. The position is consistent throughout the essay, which is a positive aspect of your writing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'On the contrary', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the phrase 'It is the reason of those person's not giving attention'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the overall flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'stuff', 'good way', and 'things'. There are also some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'give attention' (should be 'pay attention') and 'bring up variations' (should be 'introduce variety'). While the meaning is always clear, the lack of more sophisticated or academic vocabulary limits the score. To improve, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to marketing and consumer behavior, and focus on using collocations more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'some people finds' (subject-verb agreement) and 'the both parties' interests' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary comma in 'Others think that, it is', also occur. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles and possessive apostrophes to improve your accuracy.
