IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is argued by many people that advertisement is the successful tool for marketing of the products while others say that making adverts is very common and people do not pay attention on it. Although advertisements are made frequently so people do not pay attention to it, I believe that advertisements help to purchase things successfully.
These days frequency of advertisement on air is very fast. There are lots of commercial views by viewers of a single products. People feels frustration to watch ads more and more, even they skip many time. Moreover, on social media young generations also avoid to watch ads of different products because they do not have enough time to see all advertisements, so they scroll screen to the next one. For example, ads of soft drinks are mostly play one by one in a sequence with out changing with other, so viewers change the channel to the next one to avoid them. However, for purchasing a product successfully I think advertisement is an important tool which give significant information.
On the other hand, advertisement help and make easy for people to buy products. Mostly people shop online, so that they watch ads of different things on social media, TV commercials and even on YouTube, which help them to buy items conveniently. For instance, advertisement of grocery help people to buy fresh products easily, even working women mostly prefer to shop online by watching different commercials on air.
In conclusion, although people say that advertisements are very common these days and they do not have any interest in it I think that advertisement is a successful platform to purchase products.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that people skip ads, the explanation of why advertising remains successful is repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, you state that ads provide 'significant information' and help with online shopping, but you do not fully explore the psychological or economic mechanisms behind this success. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully extended with more specific reasoning or illustrative examples that go beyond general observations about online shopping.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'On the other hand' to link your thoughts. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and the flow between sentences can be slightly disjointed. For example, the transition between the discussion of social media and the example of soft drinks is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it', 'these') is always clear would enhance the overall cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'commercials', 'marketing', and 'online shopping'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'frequency of advertisement on air is very fast' (should be 'high') and 'commercial views' (likely meaning 'commercials'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary. Avoid repeating the same words, such as 'advertisement' and 'products', and try to incorporate more varied synonyms to demonstrate a wider range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the successful tool', 'the frequency'), subject-verb agreement ('People feels frustration'), and preposition usage ('pay attention on it'). Some sentences are also slightly awkward in their construction, such as 'ads of soft drinks are mostly play one by one'. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors and work on integrating more complex, error-free structures to demonstrate better control over your grammar.
