IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

IN RECENT YEARS, SOCIAL MEDIA IS WIDELY USED AND ACCEPTED BY MOST OF THE INDIVIDUALS ACROSS THE GLOBE. PEOPLE ARE TEND TO BE ATTRACTED TO PRODUCTS AND PURCHASE THEM EVEN WHEN NOT IN USE, WHILE SOME ARE NOT FASCINATED BY IT. IN MY OPINION, THE ADVERTISEMENTS PUBLISHED THROUGH VARIOUS PLATFORMS ENFORCE AND ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO BUY PRODUCTS, WITHOUT THE ACTUAL NEED OF IT. THE PRESSURE OF SOCIAL WORLD AND PEERS PERSUADE AN INDIVIDUAL TO SPEND MONEY UNNECESSARILY.

ONE OF THE STRONG REASONS FOR SHOPPING INCLUDES INFLUENCERS. THEY INFLUENCE MANY PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD AND COMPLETE THEIR TARGET, WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY HAVE IMMENSE NUMBERS OF FOLLWERS AND SUBSCRIBERS WHO BLINDLY FOLLOW WHAT THEY POST IN SOCIAL MEDIA. PEOPLE, ON THE OTHER HAND, DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THEY GET PAID FOR IT. FOR INSTANCE, THE FAMOUS PRODUCT IN INDIA, NAMED FAIR AND LOVELY CREAM, WAS INTENSIVELY USED BY MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL AGED. THEY CLAIMED THAT APPLYING THIS CREAM WOULD HELP THE SKIN TO BE BRIGHTER AND TAN-FREE. HOWEVER, THE CLAIMS WERE NOT SUCCESSFUL IN LONG RUN AND THE COMPANY HAD TO SHUT. ADVERTISEMENTS ENCOURAGE INDIVIDUALS TO PURCHASE PRODUCTS EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT NEEDED.

MEANWHILE, SOME PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT IT HAS BECOME VERY COMMON TO SELL A PRODUCT THROUGH ADVERTISEMENTS. DESPITE THE COMPETITION IN FASHION AND HOUSEHOLD AREA, PEOPLE DO NOT FALL FOR THE PREY. INSTEAD, THEY PREFER TO COMPARE FOR THE VALUE OF THE PRODUCT BY EVERY COMPANY AND LOCAL RETAILERS, AND ENJOY THE PRODUCT BY THE COST OF IT. NEVERTHELESS, PRICE OF THE ITEM IS A PROFOUNDING FACTOR TO BE CONSIDERED BEFORE BUYING IT.

IN CONCLUSION, SOME PEOPLE ARE OVERWHELMED IN BUYING THINGS WHICH ARE NOT REQUIRED DUE TO ADVERTISEMENTS BY THEIR ROLE MODELS. IN MY OPINION, I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS BECOME VERY COMMON TO PUBLISH ADS THROUGH VARIOUS SOCIAL MEDIA AND TV, AND MOST OF THE PEOPLE GO FOR THE COST OF THE PRODUCT AND NOT MERELY ITS BEAUTY.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph effectively discusses the influence of social media and influencers, though the example of the cream is slightly tangential to the core argument about persuasion. The second body paragraph attempts to address the opposing view but lacks depth, as the argument about consumers comparing prices is not fully linked back to the prompt's focus on whether advertising is 'ignored'. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. To improve, ensure each paragraph directly supports the specific view being discussed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In recent years', 'For instance', and 'Nevertheless', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'They influence many people... without understanding that they have immense numbers of followers', where the subject 'they' is ambiguous. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, which helps the overall structure remain coherent despite some minor lapses in flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'profounding factor' (though this is a slight misuse of the word 'profound') and 'fascinated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'people are tend to be attracted' (grammatical error affecting lexical flow) and 'fall for the prey' (incorrect idiom). The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but more precision and natural collocations would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several recurring grammatical errors, such as 'people are tend to be' (should be 'people tend to be') and 'all aged' (should be 'all ages'). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage throughout the text. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency of the writing. To reach a higher band, focus on correcting basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent verb tense usage.
