IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A highly controversial issue today relates to whether commercialization is getting popularity regarding attracting people to purchase more or not. while both perspectives deserve consideration, the view in favour of advertisement is more convincing.
On the one hand, the psychological manipulation is one of the prominent reason why individuals buying extensively after watching advertisements, because companies do not just sell products but also manipulate people through selling lifestyle and status. For instance, organisations hire famous celebrity to advertise their resources which creates artifical desire for non-essential items. Furthermore modern digital advertising utilize user's data to deliver highly personalized content. For example, most of the times we just search things on daily basis and allow the term and conditions of various apps to track our data why which social media get information from search history and bring it in front of our eyes with special headlines 'buy now' on apps like Tik-tok, Instagram and so on.
On the other hand, the advertising fatigue is one of the main reasons why people consider advertisement so common to ignore. Because of this, people are bombared with thousand of ads through banners, posters or digital sources on daily basis which leads to extra physical hazards so they just wants to ignore as soon as possible they can. Moreover, modern consumers have less trust on social media advertisements because numerous times they advertise free of cost applications but once we go through into this process that apps ask to purchase memberships and subscriptions . Thus, consumers consider it unreliable and non-trustworthy.
In my opinion, by providing range of facilities of items through social media or other technological systems, companies easily convert their minds to consume
even unnecessary things.
To sum up, although targeting people psychologically and using their personal data assist advertisements to attract public but unreliability and extra exposure force human brain to filter out ads.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as psychological manipulation and advertising fatigue. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The explanation of how data tracking works is clear, but the argument regarding 'physical hazards' of advertising is vague and not fully linked to the prompt. The conclusion is a bit brief and could have better synthesized the main points. Overall, the position is consistent, but the depth of analysis could be improved to reach a higher band by providing more nuanced examples of why one view is more convincing than the other.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'To sum up', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Because of this, people are bombared...'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the link between 'physical hazards' and the desire to ignore ads is not fully explained. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'psychological manipulation', 'artificial desire', and 'advertising fatigue'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'getting popularity' instead of 'gaining popularity', 'buying extensively' instead of 'purchasing extensively', and 'less trust on' instead of 'less trust in'. While these errors do not impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of precision. Expanding the range of academic collocations and refining word forms would significantly improve the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('individuals buying' instead of 'individuals buy', 'social media get' instead of 'social media gets') and prepositional errors ('trust on' instead of 'trust in'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and some awkward phrasing like 'why which social media get'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
