IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is no doubt that advertising is so common in these days but too some extent it is also best way to sell new things.

According to the modern technology, people always uses social media. We see that every brand advertised their new things but even now a days local shops also try to promote their articles with the help of social media. Too some extent, it was not always advantageable for customers, because local brand shows local things with high quality by using technology that's why people not take these type of publicity seriously. But some time people did not know about new materials or any type of new offer on special occasions then it that case advertising is best way to take their attention and connect with them.

I have my own experience about this. I remembered when I was going for a dinner with my family there was a big billboard of soft drink "Coca Cola" near mall. I was only read it but during ordering the food. I ordered that drink but then I thought I like Sprite drink. So, why I ordered this, so, my elder brother cleared me that this only due to you saw Coca cola board and this name was fresh in your mind. However, it is clear that advertising effects our mind.

In conclusion, Marketing campaigns are not always but mostly successful in their goal and persuading us to buy their things, but before buying we have to check their reviews.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses both views regarding the effectiveness of advertising and provides a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The argument regarding why people ignore advertisements is underdeveloped, and the personal anecdote, while relevant, takes up a significant portion of the essay, leaving less room for a more balanced academic discussion. The conclusion is present but could be more clearly linked to the main body arguments. To improve, ensure that each viewpoint is supported by more robust, generalized reasoning rather than relying solely on a single personal example. The response meets the minimum length requirement, but the depth of analysis remains at a basic level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For example, the transition 'According to the modern technology' is not idiomatic, and the connection between the two views is weak. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often repetitive or misused, such as the frequent use of 'too some extent' and 'that's why'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of ideas. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of non-idiomatic word choices, such as 'advantageable' (not a standard word), 'articles' (used in the context of products), and 'cleared me' (should be 'explained to me'). The repetition of basic terms like 'things' and 'advertising' limits the lexical variety. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and collocations, such as 'consumer behavior', 'marketing strategies', or 'brand awareness', rather than relying on simple, repetitive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('every brand advertised their new things'), incorrect verb tenses ('people always uses'), and awkward sentence construction ('I was only read it but during ordering the food'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence structure, tense consistency, and proofreading for basic errors would be highly beneficial.
