IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
While advertising become increasingly popular, some people believe that traditional advertising is so common that people will no longer pay. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe a combination of the two can be most effective.
On one hand advertising will play a significant role in customers point of view, because most of the consumers in today's generation are all youth with age group's around 18-25 years. The youth in today's date keep spending hours in social medias and electronic gadgets so at this point targets youth with advertising will grab the consumers attention easily. Even the product which is advertised is not needed also the youth in today's date will buy the product and use it for his/her personal satisfaction. This advertising becomes more successful.
On the other hand, some people think that advertising the product will be so common idea and end-users do not pay more attention is also correct for some extent. The reason behind this statement is most the people in rural areas and some people in the cities are senior citizens who are unaware about the advertising the product and even though if we target the youth in the country, at least 30% of the profits are been lagging because of this reason. The most of the people in this age group neglect the advertisement's which would be huge loss for business or the manufacturing.
In conclusion, although the large number of advertisements may cause some consumers to ignore them, I believe that advertising remains a powerful tool when it is creative, relevant and effectively targeted at the right audience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding youth and social media is repetitive, and the explanation of why some people ignore advertisements is slightly confusing, particularly the reference to '30% of the profits are been lagging'. While the task is addressed, the supporting arguments lack depth and precision. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete examples or logical explanations for your claims rather than relying on generalizations about age groups and consumer behavior.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in perspective. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the logical progression within paragraphs is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing. For example, the transition from discussing youth to the impact on business in the second paragraph is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of unnatural collocations and word choice errors, such as 'social medias' (should be 'social media'), 'in today's date' (should be 'nowadays' or 'currently'), and 'advertising the product will be so common idea'. These errors do not prevent understanding, but they do limit the sophistication of your expression. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise terminology related to marketing and consumer psychology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'advertising become'), incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'are been lagging'), and unnecessary articles or punctuation errors (e.g., 'advertisement's'). While you attempt to use complex sentences, they are often marred by these errors. To achieve a higher score, you need to focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with verb forms and pluralization, and ensure that your sentence structures are error-free before attempting more complex constructions.
