IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Advertising is the way to inform public that what this product is about and how it is beneficial for an induvidual. I think that, Partially it is the way to persuade the buyer to by a perticular product. Still many believe that it is just a medium to inform about the product.
The most concerning and the challenging part, which has now become a trend is to to buy the things which are popular currently in the market. These popular things usually comes in mind because of advertisement. Many large companies hire celebrity for their marketing campaign, just to make a brand image that a perticular celebrity uses a company product. A study was conducted on some buyer which reveals that, many buyer just bought the product just because it their favorite star is advertising the product. Hence, many advertisement campaign softly pursuade the buyer to but the perticular product and an individual should be careful while buying it.
On the contrary, there is a strong reason to believe that this advertisement is just a way to discribe the product and no one really cares about it. Advertisement is just a medium to reveal the product information and no one can force you to buy the product. A research was conducted in Apple company states that only few thousands people bought the iphone after the proper advertisement campaign was conducted. overall, no one really care about the the advertisement as it is just a way to inform to public.
In conclusion, some companies strongly influence the buyers to buy their product with advertisement, so it is important to understand the need of the product before purchasing it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The arguments regarding celebrity endorsements and the Apple example are relevant but lack depth and analytical rigor. The essay tends to over-generalize, particularly in the second body paragraph where the claim that 'no one really cares' about advertising is asserted without sufficient nuance. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'why' and 'how' behind these phenomena rather than simply stating them. The position is consistent, but the supporting evidence could be more sophisticated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the contrary' and 'In conclusion' to signal shifts in the argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. There are instances where the flow between sentences feels slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the celebrity endorsement example and the conclusion of that paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors (e.g., 'induvidual', 'perticular', 'discribe') and word choice issues (e.g., 'by' instead of 'buy', 'softly pursuade'). While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'marketing campaign' and 'brand image', the overall range is limited. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and ensuring accurate spelling, as frequent errors in basic vocabulary can hinder the clarity of your argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'these popular things usually comes', 'many buyer just bought'), article misuse, and punctuation errors. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate better control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips. Proofreading for subject-verb agreement and pluralization would be a great starting point.
