IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Advertising is a great way to attract customers by businesses and corporates. Many people get tempted to buy products which they see in advertisements. On the other hand, there are other people who believe that individuals have become immune to advertisements. However, I am with the former view, and this essay will discuss both the views with relevant examples.
To begin with, advertisements reach a wide range of people belonging to different age groups, such as children, teenagers and youngsters and people of higher age. These individuals are affected to a greater extent. Firstly, children are most vulnerable, and they might get lured by advertisements, that are related to toys, chocolates and other such products. They will bother their parents to buy these things for them. Secondly, youngsters get tempted by latest electronic gadgets and fashionable clothing products, which are often endorsed by their favorite celebrities. This can greatly increase the sales of such products. Moreover, people from other age groups can get attracted towards cars, housings and real-estate advertisements as they might feel that it is a better way to invest their money.
In contrast, other people say that advertisements are too common to get individuals' attention. Many people have become resistant towards advertisements. This is due to the fact that repeated advertisements on various platforms such as internet, road hoardings and television, lose their charm and appeal in the long run. For example, if while watching a television program, an advertisement of insurance is repeated during the breaks, then people will literally ignore it. Furthermore, nowadays, some people have learnt about the different advertising strategies of companies and businesses. So they are making other people aware about the same through social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. This might be a factor for people not being easily persuaded by advertisements.
In conclusion, advertising remains an effective way to convince people for buying products and services of large companies and businesses. However, if they are monotonous and repeated for a longer duration, then they might loss their appeal to people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, particularly in the body paragraphs where you categorize the impact of advertising on different age groups. To reach a higher band, ensure your conclusion does more than just summarize; it should reinforce your position more strongly. While your arguments are well-supported, some points, such as the mention of social media awareness, could be developed further to show how they specifically counteract the persuasive nature of advertising. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'In contrast,' and 'Furthermore' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more fluid. For instance, the transition between the two main body paragraphs is clear, but the internal cohesion within the second paragraph could be improved by varying the sentence structure more effectively. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'vulnerable,' 'endorsed,' and 'monotonous' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'corporates' (which is usually an adjective or refers to a specific business entity; 'corporations' is better) and 'loss their appeal' (should be 'lose'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the overall range is sufficient but not particularly sophisticated. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context to enhance the clarity and impact of your arguments.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'advertising is a great way to attract customers by businesses' (the passive construction is slightly awkward here) and 'convince people for buying' (should be 'convince people to buy'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though there are occasional minor slips. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, and your errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or more advanced relative clauses.
