IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary era, some people strongly believe that advertising plays vital role when we tend to buy a product, while a group of people says that it has a bare minimum impact on our decision making process because we don't pay much attention to it. Actually, it varies from person to person. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own stance. However, i firmly believe that advertising plays an important role on our purchasing choices.

On the one hand, companies are spending millions of dollar to push the products to the their targeted customers. Because if the the sale increases they will be acquire more profits. The way of advertising a product took a dramatic change over the last few decades. Now a days companies do not rely only on the traditional methods, rather they shifted their focus on internet based marketing. As a result, promoting products on social media has become the most dominated market place to launch their products. For instance, recently a hair company called 'Jui hair oil' launched their new products through social media influencers. As most of the people of our generation are addicted to Facebook, or Instagram reels they reached more customers just a fraction of price. Due to the fact this has created a subliminal impact on our sub-conscious mind. Hence, the moment we enter into a super shop this advertisement instantly pops out from sub- conscious to conscious mind. Thus, we there is a high chance of buying this product.

On the other hand, some people firmly believe that we are not influenced by the advertisement. Although we see a lot of advertisements from social media to Billboards, but we are aware enough to our needs and demands. Hence, it does not affect us at all.

After discussing the both perspectives i would like to say that we are highly influenced by advertisement. Furthermore, we are constantly exposed to the advertisement because companies are now using AI, and Algorithem to predict our choices.

To sum up, it not possible to state that we are not influenced by the advertisements, rather it has a profound impact on our decision making patterns on daily basis.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of social media influencers and AI algorithms. However, the development of the second perspective (that advertising is ignored) is quite brief and lacks depth compared to the first. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting arguments could be more balanced in terms of detail. The essay meets the requirements of the prompt, but the analysis of the 'ignored' viewpoint is somewhat superficial, preventing it from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some mechanical issues with referencing and flow, such as the awkward phrasing 'Thus, we there is a high chance' and the repetitive use of 'sub-conscious'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'targeted customers', 'subliminal impact', and 'decision making patterns'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'most dominated market place' (should be 'dominant marketplace') and 'acquire more profits' (should be 'generate' or 'make' profits). There is also a lack of variety in some areas, with repetitive use of basic phrases. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'plays vital role' (missing article), 'millions of dollar' (should be plural), 'the the' (repetition), and 'it not possible' (missing verb). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the student attempts complex structures, the frequency of these errors is noticeable. The errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the overall accuracy of the writing.
