IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
While I believe that advertising is very successful at compelling us to make purchases, other people say that advertising has become so rampant that we no longer give proper attention to it.
I believe that advertising is an effective way to persuade customers to buy things for the following reasons. Firstly, most adverts highlights the interesting features of a particular goods and service that makes it an attractive choice. When people learn of the amazing features of a product, it gives them compelling reasons to make a purchase. For instance, if a restaurant puts out an advert that reads "your 5th meal on us!", it sends the message that if you make four plate purchase, the fifth plate will be free. It will naturally make more people want to patronize them.
However, some people believe that adverts have become too common that we no longer pay attention to it. This is because, there are now too many adverts everywhere. Ranging from social media adverts to billboards on the streets. When there is an overwhelming amount of advert contents to consume, the mind becomes naturally lazy to process the many amount of contents. As a result, most people do not take cognizance of all the advertisements. For instance, when watching a Youtube video, several adverts interrupt and even if one watches the first and second, they might not watch the subsequent adverts as it become a nuisance at some point.
In conclusion, while i agree that advertisement is great way to persuade people to make purchases, there should be a moderation as it becomes a nuisance when it appears too commonly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the effectiveness of promotional offers and the psychological impact of ad saturation. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph is well-supported with a clear example, but the second paragraph could be more deeply explored regarding the long-term consequences of ad blindness. The conclusion is brief and could have better synthesised the main arguments. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the prompt, but the depth of analysis is more consistent with a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'As a result', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'it' in 'it sends the message' which lacks a clear antecedent. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is coherent, though the flow between sentences could be more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'patronize', 'cognizance', and 'nuisance'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'make four plate purchase' (should be 'make four plate purchases') and 'many amount of contents' (should be 'large amount of content'). The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Improving collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('most adverts highlights' should be 'highlight') and article usage ('the many amount of contents'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some errors in sentence construction, such as the fragment 'Ranging from social media adverts to billboards on the streets.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence fragments will improve your accuracy.
