IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things, other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it and its quite true for for both. Reason for the people who say advertisement is extremely successful for persuading people to buy things could be based on factors such as a new product or a new technology, if people do not know a solution exist for their problem, the product might not achieve its full potential sales, for example a mouse trap, this product was available in the market for a long time but people didn't know it existed, but when advertised properly its sales went sky, and people started to buy in batches. For the people who thinks advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it are right as well, because if someone advertises an already known product or brand, people may not notice such ads seriously or make their minds to rush and buy the product faster, if in a place of hundreds of ads playing simultaneously, for example the time square in New York, a lot of people passes by and a very less people focuses on a single ad, as hundreds of ads are playing at once its hard to focus on one ad and remember it to purchase it.

Thus both arguments are true in their own nature, a necessity is not bought because of an advertisement and an excessive can be bought due to an advertisement

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, though the position is somewhat underdeveloped. You have identified the two perspectives clearly, but the conclusion is abrupt and lacks a strong, synthesised final thought. While you provide relevant examples like the mouse trap and Times Square, the development of these ideas is limited. To reach a higher band, ensure that your personal opinion is more explicitly stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion, rather than just stating that both arguments are true. Expanding on the 'why' behind your opinion would provide the necessary depth for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into a single large paragraph, which hinders the logical flow. IELTS essays should ideally be structured into clear paragraphs for the introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. While you use some cohesive devices like 'for example' and 'thus', the lack of paragraphing makes the progression of ideas feel mechanical and cluttered. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure needs to be more formal and distinct to guide the reader effectively through your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, such as 'persuading', 'simultaneously', and 'potential sales'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'make their minds to rush' instead of 'decide to rush' and 'a very less people' instead of 'very few people'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. Focusing on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring accurate word forms will help improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation and sentence boundaries. For instance, there are several comma splices where independent clauses are joined incorrectly. Additionally, there are subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'people who thinks' instead of 'people who think'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency. Working on sentence variety and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy will significantly improve your score.
