IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Advertisement is seen everywhere around the world now. On street side billboards, social media apps, to the level that coming across an advertisement has became a daily happening now. However some people say they are not as useful as they used to be, while others argue it is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. This method of gaining reputation has been doing well in society for decades now. Advertisement is the best way for people to discover new things.

On one hand, advertisement attracts customers to businesses, whether it successful or unsuccessful business. This affects both the customers and the businesses in good way. Advertisements could also be a way for people to discover existence of things that they did not know existed. If the advertisement is made well the chances of it persuading the customer is higher.

On the other hand, advertisement are too common now. Most people will pass by a billboard or social media advertisement without even glancing at it. This could be because of lack of effort put in advertisement or the object being advertised simply does not interest the person coming across it.

In my opinion, advertisement is the best way to persuade people into buying things whether they need it for their daily life or simply for temporary pleasure. It is by far the most successful way to do so.

To sum up all the things we have talked so far, Advertisement can be persuasive is the business put effort into making it attractive. More ever, even though they have became too common it is still great way

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument that advertisements are 'too common' is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples or deeper analysis. The conclusion is incomplete, ending abruptly with 'it is still great way', which leaves the final thought unfinished. While the prompt is addressed, the lack of depth and the incomplete ending prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, ensure each body paragraph provides a concrete example or a more detailed explanation to support the main points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite basic and sometimes repetitive. Phrases like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used correctly, but the transitions between sentences within paragraphs are often mechanical. Furthermore, the final paragraph is fragmented and lacks a proper concluding sentence, which disrupts the logical flow of the essay. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, finished structure would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'best way' and 'doing well'. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'daily happening' instead of 'daily occurrence' and 'existence of things' which is slightly awkward. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to marketing and consumer behavior, and focus on using words in their correct collocations to sound more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect readability. Examples include 'advertisement are too common' (subject-verb agreement), 'has became' (incorrect verb form), and 'if the business put effort' (conditional tense error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly in the introduction. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors indicates a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of verb tenses and subject-verb agreement to reach a higher band.
