IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Advertising is more successful at preparing us to buy things according to some people. It is so common that we no longer pay attention to it according to other people. I would discuss both views and I would give my opinion.

By understanding the given statement, when people make shops, markets, plazas, they advertise the people about that they can buy these told things. They advertise the people by sharing it at internet or by making flexes and putting them on the walls in cities and villages. They think that people will not be able to search their required things. They just see the flexes and address and reach there. When they see at the flexes, the advertisement at the flexes persuade them to do shopping from there. Now people have no need to search about their required things. they just see the flexes. So, advertising has become successful in persuading the people of their areas to do shopping.

According to other people, advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. the reason of this statement is that when one thing becomes most popular, after some time, it begins to fall.According to other people, advertising is so common in this world that it is available everywhere. When we go to cities for shopping, a lot of advertisement flexes are putted on the walls of shops of cities. People have no time to read all the flexes thoroughly. They want to be far away from this.

In conclusion, I support both views because advertisement provides a source to inform people to buy things. On the other hand,it is so common that we no longer pay attention to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive. The explanation of why advertising is successful relies heavily on the concept of 'flexes' (banners), which is a narrow interpretation of the topic. The second view is also underdeveloped, lacking depth in explaining why consumers might ignore advertisements beyond the idea that they are 'popular'. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments lack the necessary complexity and breadth expected for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes repetitive (e.g., 'According to other people' is used twice in the same paragraph). The transition between ideas is often abrupt, and the logical flow within paragraphs is hindered by simple sentence structures and a lack of varied linking words. While the overall progression is discernible, the essay lacks the sophisticated referencing and smooth transitions required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. Words like 'things', 'people', and 'flexes' are used frequently, indicating a limited range. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'advertise the people about that they can buy these told things' and 'putted on the walls'. To improve, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to marketing and consumer behaviour, and work on better collocations to express your ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies primarily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often grammatically flawed or awkward, such as 'when people make shops, markets, plazas, they advertise the people about that they can buy these told things.' There are frequent errors in article usage, verb forms (e.g., 'putted'), and sentence construction. These errors are noticeable and occasionally make the reader work harder to understand the intended meaning, though they do not completely impede communication.
