IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The society is divided into altruistic and egocentric mind-sets of people. Although some masses holt the view points that advertising is highly effective in encouraging people to purchase products, whereas some people believe that advertisments have become so common that people no longer pay attention to them because of attractive images and offers. However, i believe the advertising persuades people through amazing offers and creates brand awareness.
On the one hand, the main reason why some masses favour the latter statement is because many people ignore or skip online advertisments. This means that people often have no attention towards promoting of products because they are busy in watching reels and videos. Most of the individuals often do not pay attention to advertisements on the internet. For instance, when watching a youtube video or using a websites, people may click skip ads or scroll past advertisements because they find them boring, repetitive or unnecessary.
In my opinion, although people often ignore the advertisements, advertising is still effective way to influence consumers. Creative and relevent advertisements can attract people's attention and encourage them to buy new things. The second main reason is that compaines use attractive pictures, discounts to make their costumers happy. To elaborate, having good deals on products attract the people to buy the product at low price. For example, advertisements on social media can introduce new products and show benefits to potential the buyers. As a result, more people are willing to buy the product.
To conclude, advertising can persuade people to buy products, while its widespread use can also make people less interested in it. However, i believe that effective and well-designed advertising remains influential.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention that people skip ads, the explanation could be more nuanced by discussing the psychological impact of 'ad fatigue' or the shift in consumer behavior. Similarly, the argument for effectiveness relies on general statements about 'good deals' and 'attractive pictures' rather than exploring the sophisticated data-driven targeting used by modern companies. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with specific reasoning or examples that demonstrate a deeper understanding of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In my opinion', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally imprecise (e.g., 'the latter statement' refers to a complex idea that could be better linked). The transition between the two body paragraphs could be smoother to create a more cohesive argument. Overall, the structure is clear, but the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'altruistic', 'egocentric', 'brand awareness', and 'potential buyers'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'some masses holt the view points' (should be 'some people hold the view') and 'no attention towards promoting of products' (should be 'no attention to product promotion'). There is also a tendency to repeat words like 'advertisements' and 'people' frequently. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise synonyms and collocations would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'The society is divided' (should be 'Society is divided'), 'whereas some people believe' (the 'whereas' is redundant after 'Although'), and 'using a websites' (should be 'using a website'). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy.
