IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is undeniable that in today's modern era, innumerable advertisements which influence various aspects of our daily lives. Some people believe that advertising plays a crucial role in driving individuals to purchase numerous products, while others argue that consumers tend to ignore advertisements for various reasons. This essay will not only outline both views, but also my opinion, in forthcoming fragments with a logical conclusion.

To commence with, some employers believe there are several ways to introduce products to customers, with advertising being one of the most important methods to promote and persuade people to make purchases. Firstly, the marketing department usually has the highest budget compared to other departments in a company. They believe that product sales depend significantly on the creativity of the marketing team in creating advertisements for both online and offline media. For example, sportswear brand Nike has successfully increased its profits by signing superstar footballer Cristiano Ronaldo as their brand ambassador. As a result, Nike products such as shoes, T-shirts, and accessories have become the most popular sportswear around the world.

Moreover, advertising faces some challenges in society. Many people are now more concerned about the quality and ingredients of products rather than trusting the advertisements they see or read in the media. For instance, even though Coca-Cola recruited celebrities like Selena Gomez for their commercials, the company's profits have decreased significantly over the last decade. This decline is because people have become more aware of healthy lifestyles. Furthermore, the sheer volume of advertisements on various platforms can lead to consumer fatigue, causing people to ignore them. Many individuals prefer to find real descriptions of products and read reviews from other customers. I believe that the majority of consumers are smart buyers who can research products online. Thus, reading and watching advertisements is becoming less common.

In conclusion, although some advertisements can dramatically increase a company's profits, I believe that many people tend to make purchasing decisions based on their own research rather than relying on advertisements. The supersaturation of advertisements across multiple platforms may lead to consumer boredom and disinterest.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Nike and Coca-Cola. However, the development of the second view could be more nuanced; while the essay argues that consumers are 'smart buyers,' it could further explore the psychological impact of advertising beyond just 'consumer fatigue.' The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that the analysis of the opposing view is as robust as the support for your own position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with,' 'Moreover,' and 'Thus' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. However, the referencing in the first sentence is slightly awkward ('innumerable advertisements which influence...'), which creates a minor disruption in flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the use of linking words is generally natural and effective, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision. Phrases like 'consumer fatigue,' 'supersaturation,' and 'brand ambassador' demonstrate a good range of topic-specific language. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'forthcoming fragments' in the introduction, which sounds unnatural in this context. Additionally, 'some employers believe' in the second paragraph is slightly off-topic, as the prompt refers to the general public or marketing experts rather than employers specifically. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey ideas clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a significant grammatical error in the opening sentence: 'innumerable advertisements which influence...' lacks a main verb, making it a sentence fragment. Other structures are generally accurate, such as the use of concessive clauses ('even though Coca-Cola recruited...'). While there are occasional errors in grammar and punctuation, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and a finite verb to avoid fragments and improve overall syntactic control.
