IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In this Modern era the advertising of the things is a common. because when we advertise the shop the shop's things people will get to know about the shop. In 2026 all the world have their personal phones and some influencers advertise very well and the advertise is going viral. Some shop owners advertise things on the online platforms. on the other hand many people think online advertise or advertise to call people to buy things is not a good thing. Because the higher growth shops were shown and some middle class shop were hidden and they cant earn enough money to handle the family responsibilities. But as we see all people start from zero and all world have their phones. They advertise his/her shop on the online platforms because doing this they have also known as the Top shop. I asked all the people that doing advertising a shop is not a bad thing but at least also think about the poor person shop.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay attempts to address both views regarding advertising, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack the necessary depth for an academic task. The student touches upon the effectiveness of advertising and the potential negative impact on smaller businesses, but the discussion is superficial and lacks clear structure. The position is somewhat unclear, and the essay does not provide a balanced or well-supported exploration of the prompt. To improve, you must expand your arguments with specific examples and ensure you address all parts of the prompt in greater detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks clear paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and paragraphs effectively. For instance, the transition between the two views is abrupt, and the use of 'on the other hand' is the only notable attempt at linking. The ideas are presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and the overall structure is not logical. To improve, you should use clear paragraph breaks for each main idea and employ a wider range of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to guide the reader through your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'things', 'shop', and 'advertise'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or an awareness of collocation. Phrases like 'the advertising of the things is a common' are awkward and demonstrate a limited range. The word choice is often imprecise, which hinders the clarity of the message. To improve, you should focus on learning topic-specific vocabulary related to marketing and business, and practice using synonyms to avoid repetition. Aim to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'all the world have'), article usage, and sentence structure. The sentences are mostly simple, with very few attempts at complex structures. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and sentence boundaries. For example, 'because when we advertise the shop the shop's things people will get to know about the shop' is a run-on sentence that lacks clarity. To improve, you need to focus on basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
