IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern era, everything is shifted towards digital devices and people find it more convenient to do shopping online. Some people believe that advertisement on social media is very popular in gaining more customers, while there are some others who think that it becomes so normal and we do not even bother about it. However, I agree with the first one that it encourages us to buy things which we even do not know about.

Social media adds are becoming more popular day by day, and we come to know about a lot of things when we open our different apps. When we want to buy a specific thing but we don't know about the exact website to buy that product and we do not have time to go and buy physically. then apperance of such add in front of us makes it easy for us to order that thing without going anywhere. It also help us in buying different study packages. For example, I wanted a rolling sheet for my kitchen and I ordered it from temu when I saw an add on my instagram. So it pursuaded me to purchase a rolling sheet.

The second view is that due to abundance of adds we are generally paying less attention to them. it is because we reamin busy most of our time in our job and household chores and we don't have enough time to watch mobile phone, so when we see our phone we want to see a particular shows rather than wasting our time on useless adds. For instance, if someone is doing their impotant task and sn add suddenly appears, they will definetely cancel that add and continue their important task. As a result, they ignore that particuar add.

To conclude, it is successful in pursuading us to buy things by making it convenient and accessible, whereas some ignore them because they conider it wasting of their time. Consequently, I agree with the first opinion because it convienced me to buy new things.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide a personal example regarding a 'rolling sheet', the discussion on why advertising is ignored could be more deeply explored beyond just being 'busy'. The conclusion reiterates your position, but the overall argument lacks a sophisticated level of analysis required for higher bands. You have covered all parts of the prompt, but the supporting points remain somewhat superficial.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'For example', and 'As a result', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. There are instances where referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'I agree with the first one', which could be more explicitly stated. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'convenient', 'abundance', and 'persuading'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'adds' instead of 'ads', 'apperance', 'reamin', 'impotant', 'conider') and minor word choice issues (e.g., 'doing their important task' instead of 'performing an important task'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score as they show a lack of precision in spelling and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'everything is shifted' (tense/voice), 'it help us' (subject-verb agreement), and 'we don't have enough time to watch mobile phone' (article usage). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with sentence fragments like 'then apperance of such add...'. These errors are noticeable but rarely prevent the reader from understanding your intended meaning.
