IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is often argued that some people believe showing their products can be achievement for raising their business while others believe that advertising is not that good because no one pays attention to it. In my opinion, advertising is a better option for growing anyone's products. The essay below will discuss both the views and provide benefits of advertising in support of my answer.
To begin with, those who believe in advertising their products think that it can be beneficial for their customer's perspective. For instance, if an individual sees something on the internet they want to buy that because an advertiser provides the benefits of the product. As a result, this trend leads the businessman to a greater success.
On the other hand, those who believe advertising is overused think that people no longer notice it because they see it everywhere. To illustrate this, a majority of people believe that someone showing off their products has a negative effect because some people show bad products online. However, they think advertising their product cannot influence customer demand.
From my perspective, advertising any product can be beneficial for our marketing industry. Moreover, advertising provides a lot of success and benefits in higher demand. Therefore, a majority of people should advertise their products to raise more funds for their business.
In conclusion, both views have different approaches as advertising can be beneficial or have a small effect of not advertising our products on our business. Personally, I believe that advertising our products helps business grow and meets customer demand.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments are somewhat repetitive and lack depth; for instance, the explanation of why people ignore advertising is vague, focusing on 'bad products' rather than the psychological concept of ad-blindness or saturation. The conclusion is also slightly repetitive, restating the prompt rather than synthesizing the arguments. To reach a higher band, you need to provide more specific examples or logical reasoning to support your claims, ensuring that each paragraph contributes a distinct, well-developed point.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the phrase 'small effect of not advertising' is confusing. The flow between sentences is generally functional, but the essay would benefit from more varied and sophisticated linking words to improve the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There is a reliance on basic terms like 'good,' 'bad,' and 'things.' Phrases such as 'raising their business' and 'marketing industry' are used in ways that are slightly unnatural or imprecise. While the meaning is clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to business and marketing, such as 'brand awareness,' 'consumer behavior,' or 'market penetration.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'showing their products can be achievement' and 'leads the businessman to a greater success.' Some sentences are clunky or awkward, such as 'advertising provides a lot of success and benefits in higher demand.' Punctuation is generally correct, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent. Increasing the accuracy of basic sentence construction and refining the use of articles and prepositions will help improve your score.
