IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

THE PAST 50 YEARS HAVE SEEN A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE IN ADVERTISING. AS PER SOME INDIVIDUALS ADVERSTISING IS REMARKABLY SUCCESSFUL TO INFLUENCE US TO PURCHASE GOODS. WHILE OTHER PEOPLE SHARE THAT VOTE IN FAVOR TO ADVERTISING IS VERY WIDESPREAD THAT WE NO NEED TO GIVE ATTENTION TO IT. MEANWHILE, NOT ONLY BOTH VIEWS BUT ALSO MY OPINION WILL BE EXPALINED IN THE ENSUING PARAGRAPHS, ALONG WITH EXAMPLES.

EXAMINING THE FORMER OPINION, THE FOREMONST ARGUMENT THE SUPPORTERS WHOULD PUT FORWORD IS THAT ADVERTISING STRONGLY INFLUENCE PEOPLE'S BUYING DECISIONS. TO JUSTIFY IT FURTHER, COMPANIES USE ATTRACTIVE IMAGES, EMOTIONAL MASSAGES, DISCOUNTS AND CELEBRITIES TO MAKE PRODUCTS SEEM MORE ATTRACTIVE. REPEATED ADVERTISING CAN ALSO MAKE SENCE OF TRUST AND FAMILIERITY. AN ILLUSTRATION OF THIS THINKS FAMOUSE FOOTBALL CELEBRITIES LIKE RONALDO AND MESSI PROMOTE SPORTS SHOES AND BRANDED T-SHIRTS AND FASHIONABLE PRODUCTS. YOUNG PEOPLE AND CELEBRITIES'S FOLLOWERS PERSUDING THAT THINGS BECAUSE THEY ADMIRE THE PLAYER.

UNDOUBTEDLY, THE LATTER VIEW HAS ITS OWN CLIM. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ARGUMENT IS THAT PEOPLE EXPOSE THOUSANDS OF ADVERTISMENTS ON TV, MOBILES, INTERNET AS WELL AS ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT. TO BE MORE SPECIFIC, MANY PEOPLE SKIP, BLOCK OR SCROLL AND NOT PAY MORE ATTENTION AND PAST ADVERTISEMENT WITHOUT NOTICING THEM. TO EXEMPLIFY, WHEN WATCHING YOUTUBE VIDEOS AND VIEWS OFTEN SKIP ADVERTISEMENTS AFTER FEW SECONDS. ALTHOUGH, PEOPLE MAY IGNORE ADVERTISEMENT, CREATIVE APPEALING ADVERTISEMENT STILL ATTRACT PEOPLE.

TO SUM UP, IN THIS COMPETITIVE WORLD, IN MY OPINION ADVERTISING STILL EFFECTIVE, BUT IT INFLUENECE DEPEND ON THE TYPE OF ADVERTISEMENTS AND OUTLOOK OF THE PEOPLE.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention celebrity endorsements and the prevalence of digital ads, the arguments could be extended further with more depth or specific analysis. The introduction is a bit repetitive, and some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'share that vote in favor to advertising'. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph fully explores the 'why' and 'how' behind your points rather than just listing examples. Overall, the task is addressed, but the depth of discussion is at a Band 6 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'To justify it further', 'Undoubtedly', and 'To sum up' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Meanwhile, not only both views but also my opinion will be explained'. Additionally, there are some issues with referencing and sentence flow, such as 'An illustration of this thinks famous football celebrities', where the connection between the example and the argument is slightly disjointed. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words will help elevate your score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including terms like 'celebrity endorsements', 'competitive world', and 'persuading'. However, there are several instances of incorrect word choice or spelling errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'massages' instead of 'messages', 'sence' instead of 'sense', and 'familierity' instead of 'familiarity'. The phrase 'share that vote in favor' is also non-idiomatic. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'we no need to give attention', 'people expose thousands of advertisements' (should be 'are exposed to'), and 'the supporters would put forword' (spelling error). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are inconsistent throughout the text. While these errors do not completely prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like verb forms will help improve your accuracy.
