Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 136 words. Consequently, the development of ideas is severely limited. While the essay touches upon both sides of the argument—advertising as a persuasive tool and the potential for consumer apathy—the discussion is superficial and lacks the necessary depth and supporting examples required for an academic task. Furthermore, the student does not clearly state their own opinion as requested by the prompt. Due to the significant under-length and lack of development, the response is incomplete.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into three short paragraphs, which is a basic structure. However, the progression of ideas is disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'First of all' and 'On the other hand', they are often used mechanically or incorrectly, such as 'On the opposite hand'. The lack of sufficient content makes it difficult to establish a logical flow of argument. Paragraphing is present but the content within the paragraphs is underdeveloped, leading to a lack of overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward word choices and incorrect collocations, such as 'snatches more customers' instead of 'attracts' or 'acquires', and 'count losses' instead of 'incur losses'. The student relies on basic terminology like 'good advertisement' and 'bad advertising', which lacks the precision expected at higher levels. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to discuss the topic with any degree of sophistication or nuance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'The Question passage is illustrates' (incorrect verb form), 'Advertising is always attracts' (incorrect passive/active construction), and 'customer can do bad reports' (unnatural phrasing). There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the control over basic grammar is inconsistent. Punctuation is generally functional, but the overall grammatical accuracy is low, with errors occurring in almost every sentence.
